Top seed Jannik Sinner has been the biggest news in the world of tennis heading into the US Open. The Italian tested positive twice for a banned substance but has escaped a ban from the ATP tour.
This has resulted in widespread criticism of Sinner. However, the World No. 1 is back in New York and addressed all the complications during the pre-tournament press conference.
It's not ideal before a Grand Slam. But, you know, in my mind, I know that I haven't done anything wrong. I had to play already months with this in my head, but you know, just remembering myself that I haven't done really anything wrong. I always respect that these rules, and I will always respect these rules of anti-dopping.Jannik Sinner said in the pre-tournament press conference
The criticism is more directed at the ATP tour than Sinner. Usually, tennis authorities suspend players for taking banned substances, regardless of their intentions.
Just a relief for myself having this result. And yeaa, it's good to be back here. It's an amazing city, amazing place to play tennis. I will just try to enjoy as much as I can and hopefully have a good tournamentJannik Sinner added
The most recent examples are Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep. Both tennis sensations were banned over prohibited substances in 2016 and 2022, respectively.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will be hoping to become the first top seed since Rafael Nadal in 2017 to win the US Open. The Italian comes into the tournament after beating Frances Tiafoe to claim his maiden Cincinnati Open title.
Sinner will kickstart his campaign against Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday (August 27). Afterwards, he might face Alex Michelsen. The 23-year-old could potentially play 2016 US Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka in a highly entertaining contest. In the Round of 16, he may come up against Arthur Fils.
Sinner is projected to face Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic for the second straight Grand Slam in the final three rounds. The Australian Open champion lost to Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarterfinals last month.
