Before the 2024 season, Jannik Sinner had never reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament. But since 2024, he has played five Grand Slam finals, winning four titles. He became World No.1 and also emerged victorious in last year’s ATP Finals.

This season, he defended the Australian Open by breezing past Alexander Zverev. And after serving his three-month doping ban, he came close to winning his first French Open title but failed to cross the final hurdle. Carlos Alcaraz came from two sets down and also saved three championship points in the fourth set to defend his title.

The Italian ace, however, avenged his defeat with a four-set win in the Wimbledon final. Sinner is in Cincinnati and is bidding to defend the title. He has made it to the semifinal after registering his career’s first win against Felix Auger-Aliassime after two consecutive defeats. But Sinner lost those matches in 2022 and 2024.

At present, he is nearly invincible and broke no sweat in defeating the Canadian ace in the Cincinnati quarterfinals. He, in fact, bageled Auger-Aliassime in the first set and restricted him to just two games in the following set. When asked by Prakash Amritraj on Tennis Channel how he has been able to accomplish so much, the 23-year-old credited the practice sessions and his love for challenges.

I think that, or I’m someone who loves challenges, and I was looking forward to this kind of match today because I never won against him. The last time we played it was long time ago. So even there, you don’t know exactly what to expect. But he is a very, very tough opponent to play against. And in my mind, I knew that. So, I knew already this morning.

The four-time Grand Slam champion will next be locking horns with Terence Atmane, the qualifier from France who knocked out three seeded players, including Taylor Fritz in the fourth round and Holger Rune in the quarterfinal. Atmane will be playing a quarterfinal of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in his career.

Prior to this season, he had never progressed to the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament. He is also participating in the Cincinnati Masters for the first time in his career. Sinner will be locking horns with the World No.136 for the first time in his career.

Jannik Sinner shares how he chills out between matches

Jannik Sinner, in one of his interviews in Cincinnati, said he would be playing golf a lot because he didn’t find anything else to do in the city. During that same interview with Tennis Channel, Sinner was asked how he likes to wind down after matches. His answer was golf and cards, but he also loves to talk with his family and friends who currently are in Italy.

Well, at the moment, because we have this time difference too, my family’s at home. So, I… my family and all those close people I call when I wake up, which makes things a little bit easier. But from this time now on…because I haven’t changed the time (on his watch). It’s 11 now, so…they’re going to sleep now. So, I don’t need the phone anymore, which is also strange, but in the same time, sometimes, it’s good…you take away the phone.

Sinner has not yet defended a Masters 1000 title in his career. If he wins, he will become the first man since Roger Federer (2014-2015) to defend the Cincinnati title. The World No.1 is chasing his third title of the season after victories in Melbourne and Paris. Apart from these, he also reached the French Open and the Italian Open finals, losing both to Carlos Alcaraz.

The Cincinnati Masters is his first tournament since his Wimbledon victory. He has so far lifted four Masters 1000 titles, the last of which he won at the 2024 Shanghai Masters.
