Jannik Sinner has been making serious changes to his game on the court since the US Open. The former World No.1 claimed his third title of the season after beating American youngster Learner Tien in straight sets at the China Open. He will now hope to do the same at the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters.
Sinner openly declared his desire to shake up areas of his game after falling to Carlos Alcaraz in four sets at the US Open. The defeat was the sixth time he fell to the Spaniard since last year, taking his head-to-head record against the 22-year-old to 5-10 on tour. The only time he defeated Alcaraz in two years was at the Wimbledon Championships final in July.
The Italian star revealed that she wanted to become more unpredictable on the court, but admitted that to achieve that he would have to make some mistakes on the court and also lose some matches. He’s yet to lose any match since then, but at the China Open, he dropped two sets en route to the final.
He dropped his first point in the second round of the tournament against Frenchman Terence Atmane. The second time was he did the same was against Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals. Sinner is currently at the Shanghai Masters, where he’s seeking to defend the title. He’s the favorite to win the ATP 1000 tournament after Alcaraz withdrew due to some physical issues.
After his triumph at the China Open, he was asked if he had begun implementing the changes to his game already. The 24-year-old revealed that he’s already changed certain areas of his game, which is hard for a professional player at his level. He added that he’s also aiming to improve on his shots on the court:
Yeah, I mean, I’m not the only one who is changing. If you ask every player, every player is changing stuff and trying to get better. You know, whatever we try to do, it’s not crazy steps, just trying to adjust a couple of things, trying to get better as a player, like everyone else does. Yeah, I mean, that’s it. Certain shots that worked slightly better than the months before, certain shots we can still improve.
Sinner will hope that his changes are implemented quickly before facing tough opponents at the Shanghai Masters. In the section of his draw, he’s projected to face Dutch star Tallon Griekspoor or Jenson Brooksby in the third round. While, he could potentially take on Alexander Bublik, who defeated him at the Halle Open in June.
Jannik Sinner says he’s confident to take on the tough challenge at the Rolex Shanghai Masters
Jannik Sinner’s only threat to winning the Rolex Shanghai Masters is certainly Novak Djokovic. Djokovic has proven this season that he can still compete with the top players on tour despite being 38. But, Djokovic has not beaten Sinner since last season. In fact, the Italian has beaten him twice this season.

Ahead of Sinner’s opening match at the Shanghai Masters, he was asked how he felt about the tournament. The top seed revealed that the conditions of the court are different from the China Open and the challenge to win the title is tougher, but hopes to go through with confidence:
Conditions are definitely different than Beijing, so I have only one practice session to get ready, but let’s see. It’s going to be a very, very difficult and tough challenge, especially the first round match. You never know what’s going to happen, so let’s see. But obviously I’m very happy to be back here and play in front of Shanghai fans.
Sinner opens his account at the Shanghai Masters against Daniel Altmaier in the second round. Their head-to-head record currently stands at 1-1 after Altmaier won their last meeting in five sets at the 2023 Roland Garros. This season, the German star has also beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas, reaching the third round of the US Open.
