Jannik Sinner advanced to the semifinals of the Paris Masters after defeating Ben Shelton in straight sets. The Italian is on the cusp of becoming World No.1 again.

Shortly after the match, the second seed discussed his quarterfinal performance while also watching the clash between Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev. During the interview, Sinner paused when Zverev fell to the court late in the first set.

The presenter mentioned that it might be a hamstring injury, and many were reminded of Zverev’s similar fall during the 2022 Roland Garros semifinals against Rafael Nadal. The German missed the entire season because of it.

Fortunately, the concern eased when Medvedev walked over and helped Zverev to his feet. The entire incident unfolded while Sinner was watching from the Tennis Channel studio.

Jannik Sinner advances to the Paris Masters semifinals

World No.2 Jannik Sinner advanced to the semi-finals of the Rolex Paris Masters after a commanding win over Ben Shelton on Friday. The Italian star defeated the American 6-3, 6-3 to reach the last four of the French ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time. The victory also kept alive his bid to reclaim the World No. 1 ranking.

Playing his 400th tour-level match, Sinner extended his indoor winning streak to 24 matches, a run that began in November 2023. If he captures his fifth title of the year and his first Masters 1000 trophy of 2025, he will move back to the top of the PIF ATP Rankings.

Sinner was flawless from the baseline, producing no unforced errors on his backhand and only ten on his forehand. His sharp returning and quick reactions neutralized Shelton’s powerful serve, and he sealed the opening set in just 34 minutes with a stunning backhand winner.

Although Shelton briefly broke Sinner to love early in the second set, the Italian immediately responded. A costly double fault from Shelton at 3-4 handed Sinner the chance to serve for the match, and he made no mistake, wrapping up a confident victory in just 69 minutes.

Jannik Sinner gets bad news for WTA Finals

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner is just four wins away from reclaiming the World No. 1 spot from Carlos Alcaraz. The Italian can rise to the top if he wins the Paris Masters, taking advantage of Alcaraz’s early exit from the tournament. However, even if Sinner does return to No. 1, he will not be the top seed at the ATP Finals in Turin.

The seedings for the Finals are based on the ATP Race to Turin standings, not the official world rankings. Alcaraz currently leads the race with 11,050 points, while Sinner can reach a maximum of 10,000 points with a title run in Paris. This means the Spaniard will remain the top seed in Group Jimmy Connors, while Sinner will lead Group Bjorn Borg.

If Sinner wins in Paris, he would temporarily move ahead of Alcaraz in the ATP Rankings with 11,500 points compared to the Spaniard’s 11,250. But that lead would last only one week, as Sinner will lose 1,500 points from his undefeated 2024 ATP Finals win once those results drop, while Alcaraz loses just 200. After the adjustment, Sinner would fall back behind his rival.

Behind the top two, Alexander Zverev is in line to be the third seed in Turin, with Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz close behind. Zverev could still be overtaken if Djokovic performs well at the upcoming Hellenic Championships. Fritz also has a chance to move up if he wins in Paris, though Djokovic is expected to skip the Finals again, focusing only on Grand Slams and select major events.
