Jannik Sinner defeated Alex de Minaur at the Davis Cup Finals on Saturday (November 23) with a 6-3, 6-4 win. This victory not only secured Italy’s semifinal win over Australia but also placed Sinner on an exclusive list. He became the fourth man this century to achieve 18 or more wins against Top 10 players in a single season. Italy will now play in the Davis Cup final for the second year in a row.
Last year, Italy beat Australia 2-0 to win their first Davis Cup title since 1976. This year, the Italians will be up against the Netherlands, who famously beat Spain in the quarterfinals and ended Rafael Nadal‘s tennis career. Sinner’s achievement puts him alongside tennis legends Roger Federer, Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, the only other players to hit this milestone. He is also the first to reach 18 Top 10 wins in a season since Djokovic did it in 2016.
Sinner will not add to his Top 10 victories this year since the Netherlands, their opponent in the final, do not have any Top 10 players. This year, Sinner has an 18-5 record against Top 10 players. Most of these wins came in recent weeks—he was 10-5 in early October but has gone 8-0 against Top 10 opponents since then, without losing a single set.
Sinner’s win over De Minaur was also a personal milestone. It marked the 40th Top 10 win of his career. His overall record against these elite players now stands at 40-32, highlighting his growing dominance in men’s tennis.
Jannik Sinner to haunt Netherlands in the Davis Cup final
The Netherlands have made it to their first-ever Davis Cup final after an exciting win against Germany in Malaga. Botic van de Zandschulp secured a dramatic victory over Daniel Altmaier, finally winning on his tenth match point. In the second match, Tallon Griekspoor came back from a set down to defeat Jan-Lennard Struff, completing the Dutch victory.

They will face Italy in the final on Sunday. This is a rematch of their meeting in last year’s Davis Cup Finals, where Italy defeated the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. That win helped Italy on their way to claiming the title last November.
Dutch captain Paul Haarhuis shared his thoughts earlier this year on that match. He admitted that Jannik Sinner’s presence in the Italian team had a huge impact. The 23-year-old’s performance took away the Netherlands’ chances of progressing further.
Haarhuis praised Sinner for both his skill and mental strength. He called the Italian player’s temperament as impressive as his talent. Sinner has had an incredible year, winning two Grand Slams and showing he is one of the best players in men’s tennis.
