Jannik Sinner‘s first passion was skiing, not tennis. He began skiing at the age of three and quickly found success. By eight, he had won a giant slalom championship, and at 12, he finished as a national runner-up in Italy.

Despite his early success on the slopes, Sinner chose to focus on tennis when he was 13. In an interview with CNBC, he explained that the challenge of tennis appealed to him more. He liked that tennis offered many opportunities to recover and win, unlike skiing where a single mistake could end a race. Sinner said in an interview to CNBC:

You know, you see when someone struggles, you see when someone is enjoying it, and and you you and you have one opponent at a time, and you don’t always have to play your very best tennis to win that day, but in the same time, if you don’t play the best tennis against the best players, you know that you’re going to lose. So there are many things you know as as a tennis player you have to go through, but that’s exactly what I love.

Interestingly, Sinner’s childhood idol was not a tennis player but American skiing legend Bode Miller. Football was also a sport he loved, though he never pursued it seriously. Still, the sport remained close to his heart.

His connection to football was highlighted after his Australian Open win. During a match at AC Milan’s home stadium, San Siro, the fans sang in his honor. That moment showed how much support he has beyond just the tennis world.

Well, now I, I’m gonna take some time off, you know, a couple of days it’s good for me, just to realize on what everything happened and and then, you know, there are no secrets, then you have to go back to work again and prepare the US wing…

Sinner is expected to return to action at the Canadian Masters, where he won his first Masters 1000 title in 2023. Then, he will be the defending champion at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. Sinner went on an amazing run at the back end of last season, and that started from the Cincinnati Open win. However, just a few hours later, his doping scandal surfaced for the first time.

Despite the controversy, Sinner managed to keep his winning streak intact and win the Shanghai Masters and the ATP Finals. He was also able to defend the Davis Cup title for Italy.

How can Jannik Sinner strengthen his World No.1 status in the North American hard-court swing?

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner leads the PIF ATP Rankings by 3,430 points ahead of Carlos Alcaraz. However, the race for World No. 1 could become much closer during the North American hard-court season. Sinner must defend 3,200 points through the US Open, while Alcaraz has only 60 points to protect. This makes the battle for the top ranking wide open heading into the final Grand Slam of the year.

Last year, Alcaraz missed the Masters 1000 event in Canada and suffered early exits in both Cincinnati and the US Open. He earned only 50 points in New York. Sinner, on the other hand, had a strong showing by reaching the quarter-finals in Canada and winning both Cincinnati and the US Open. This makes his ranking more vulnerable in the coming weeks.

Sinner recently beat Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, ending a four-match losing streak against the Spaniard. That victory improved his record to 5–8 in their head-to-head series. With events in Toronto and Cincinnati approaching, Alcaraz has a big opportunity to narrow the points gap before the US Open.

Sinner became the first Italian to reach World No. 1 and has held the spot for 58 straight weeks, the fourth-longest debut run in ATP history. Alcaraz previously held the top position for 36 weeks after winning the 2022 US Open. Following Wimbledon, Sinner has a 26-3 match record for the season, while Alcaraz stands at 48-6.
