Fabio Fognini has called time on his career this year after lifting nine singles titles. At Wimbledon, the Italian played his career’s last match, giving a scare to eventual runner-up Carlos Alcaraz, taking two sets off him.
In the final, Alcaraz failed to complete a three-peat, losing in four sets to Jannik Sinner. Fognini, during his interview with Eurosport, lauded his compatriot for his achievements, but believes the 24-year-old doesn’t have certain qualities that he has.
Sinner is the best in the world; of course, I would sign up to be him if given the chance. But Jannik would also consider living as Fabio. What do I have that Jannik doesn’t? I have spontaneity, I am very temperamental. I tell you things directly to your face. But it is difficult to compare us; we are completely different personalities.
Fabio Fognini said
The former World No.9, who never progressed beyond the quarterfinals of a Major event, met the four-time Grand Slam champion just once and lost that match. Back in 2022, Sinner knocked him out in the third round of the Italian Open in three sets.
Jannik Sinner reveals the first event he will play next year
The 2025 tennis season has ended, and Jannik Sinner clinched six titles from 10 finals, the second-most this season after Carlos Alcaraz, who was the winner of eight trophies from 11 finals. The last trophy that the World No.2 lifted was the ATP Finals by defeating Alcaraz in straight sets, defending his crown.

Sinner recently attended the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, during which Sky Sports asked him about the first tournament he will play next year. He has made it clear that he will once again be skipping the warm-up tournaments before the Australian Open.
Next tournament, Australian Open middle of January. So we have some time off, time to practice, and try to get ready for next year.
Jannik Sinner told Sky Sports
But before the first Major of the season, Sinner will be featuring at the Hyundai Card Super Match exhibition event, where he will clash with none other than his arch-rival Alcaraz. Sinner met the six-time Grand Slam champion six times this year, winning twice, at Wimbledon and the ATP Finals.
Greg Rusedski compares Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner with the Big 3
Alcaraz and Sinner are dominating so much that the tennis world is comparing them with the formidable trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Recently, former Grand Slam finalist Greg Rusedski called the youngsters better players than the Big 3. But the Brit wonders whether Sinner and Alcaraz would cross the 20 Grand Slam title tally.

The Roland Garros final they played this year was one of the best matches we have ever seen, including anything we saw from the Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic match-ups. That tells you we are looking at two players here who are playing at another level, but whether they ever win as many titles as the Big 3, that’s a very different debate.
Greg Rusedski told Tennis365
Apart from the French Open, ATP Finals, Sinner met Alcaraz in the finals of the Italian Open, Cincinnati Masters, and the US Open, losing all. Sinner trails 6-10 in the head-to-head matchups against the Spaniard.
You have to respect the longevity and the achievements of Roger, Rafa, and Novak. Their records will be very tough to beat.
Greg Rusedski added
Federer and Nadal retired at the 2022 Laver Cup and the 2024 Davis Cup, respectively. Djokovic, after retiring mid-match at the Australian Open, lost to Sinner at the French Open and Wimbledon, and later, Alcaraz knocked him out at the US Open.
