World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continued his title defense at the National Bank Open with a straight-set win over Alejandro Tabilo. The Italian, who missed the Paris Olympics, advanced to the quarterfinals after a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the left-hander.

By winning this match, Sinner made a bit of history by reaching the quarterfinals in his first 10 tournaments of the season. The last player to achieve this was former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in 2015 when he won three Grand Slam titles and the ATP World Tour Finals.

Sinner’s schedule is quite hectic on Saturday (August 10) as he will be in action twice. His match against Tabilo was postponed from the previous day due to heavy rain. To balance things out, the tournament has scheduled the top seed to play twice on the same day.

This could be challenging for Sinner’s title defense chances. However, the Italian is fresh and hasn’t played much tennis recently, so he should be ready to take on his next opponent, Andrey Rublev.

Jannik Sinner in prime position to maintain World No.1 ranking

Olympic Gold Medalist Novak Djokovic has decided to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters, meaning he won’t be defending his title. The Serb defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a high-quality three-set final last year.

Djokovic, who recently won the Olympic Singles Gold medal, chose to skip Montreal as it coincided with his schedule at the Paris Olympics. However, the Serb will now lose 1,000 points after his withdrawal from Cincinnati.

As a result, Djokovic will now sit at 7,460 points. Alcaraz, who won the silver medal, has not yet decided whether he will participate in Cincinnati. He will be defending 600 points from last year.

Jannik Sinner, who is currently defending his National Bank Open title, sits at 8,770 points after reaching the quarterfinals of the Canadian Masters. However, with Djokovic’s withdrawal from Cincinnati, the Italian will at least stay at World No. 1 until the end of his US Open campaign.
