Jannik Sinner meets Maria Sharapova on advice of Coach Piatti to learn the mindset of ‘Champion Players’

Jannik Sinner has quickly become one of the fan favourites with his gameplay since turning pro in 2018. The 19-year old Italian became just the 4th teenager to reach the finals of the Miami Open joining Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the exclusive club.

Sinner recently met former tennis star Maria Sharapova who became World No. 1 at the age of 18. On the advice of his coach Riccardo Piatti who was the last coach of Sharapova before she quit the game, 19-year old Sinner met the former star to understand the mindset of champion players to help the youngster become a better player.

“I wanted Jannik to understand the mentality of a No. 1. Maria has priorities. When she is on the court, she is watching the ball, hitting the ball, and doing everything perfect,” said Piatti in a recent interview.

Piatti was all praise for the retired Russian star who he saw always focussed on her game even during the off-time. “When she plays points, she’s focussed to play the points. When she’s off the court, she’s focussed on the fitness part, the physical part, and when she finishes everything, she’s social,” added Riccardo.

“Maria is an example that she has a great mentality to be a champion. It’s not me explaining [a lesson], but another one like Nadal or Maria. He saw the mentality from these players. Maria was very, very important for me and for him,” said Piatti who told how Sinner idolises Sharapova and Rafael Nadal.
