Jannik Sinner secured his fourth title of the season at the Vienna Open, although the final was anything but straightforward. He won 3-6 6-3 7-5 against Alexander Zverev.

A worrying moment for Sinner came late in the third set when he began struggling with cramps. The Italian later said that his determination and refusal to give in helped him stay competitive until the end. Sinner said in his post-match interview:

Yeah it was very difficult of course. Most important is trying to not give up. Trying to stay there. Trying to see what the situation is. I just tried to make the right choices at the right time. I think that was the key today. Serving well, saving energy in my service games was important too. It was a very great performance from me, but I feel like it was from both sides.

This victory marks his second title in Vienna after winning the tournament in 2023. It is also his third hard-court title of the year, following triumphs at the Australian Open and the Tokyo Open.

Sinner will now turn his focus to the Paris Masters, where he enters as the second seed. It remains the only major event that neither he nor Carlos Alcaraz has managed to win so far.

World No.2 Jannik Sinner battled through physical problems to take the Vienna title again at the Erste Bank Open. Zverev started stronger, hitting with confidence from both sides to claim the opening set. Sinner looked uncomfortable and moved with difficulty between points, raising concern after his recent cramp issues in Shanghai. Even so, he found his rhythm and responded with a sharp performance to take the second set.

Tension rose in the deciding set as Sinner again appeared to suffer cramp in his left leg. He kept points shorter, attacked more, and even reached for pickle juice during sit-downs to help push through the pain. His strategy worked as he stayed aggressive in key moments.

Sinner grabbed a crucial break late in the set after a long rally ended with Zverev missing a backhand. He then served out the match to secure his fourth title of the season. The win ties their head-to-head at four each and puts him alongside Roger Federer and Andy Murray as champions who have earned multiple Vienna crowns while holding the No. 1 ranking.

Jannik Sinner still in the hunt for the World No.1 ranking

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner lifted the Vienna Open trophy again after a tense final against Alexander Zverev. The Italian dropped the first set, then turned the match around for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win. It is his fourth title of the 2025 season and a welcome return to the podium in Austria.

The clash featured the top two seeds at the event, making the victory even more meaningful. Sinner earned 500 ranking points with his run. He will rise from 10,000 to 10,500 points in the ATP Rankings update. That strengthens his position as world No. 2 and increases his cushion over Zverev.

Sinner also used the opportunity to close the gap on Carlos Alcaraz in the battle for year-end No. 1. Alcaraz did not compete this week, leaving the door open. The gap is now less than 1,000 points heading into the Paris Masters.

In the Race to Turin standings, Sinner reaches 9,000 points for the season. Alcaraz still holds a strong advantage with more than 11,000 points. Even so, Vienna gives Sinner a boost of momentum and keeps the fight for the top spot alive.
