Jannik Sinner likes to play under intense pressure and against payers like Novak Djokovic. The Serb is the type of player who can turn the table completely in his favor by raising his level immediately.

It was Djokovic who Sinner had faced in the semifinal of the recently concluded Wimbledon. But the match was not similar to that of their French Open semifinal clash. In Paris, though the match ended in straight sets, Sinner had to toil to win points. At Wimbledon, a struggling Djokovic was no match for the eventual winner.

Yeah, you know, every time when you play against Novak, it’s very, very difficult because he won so much. He has this, this standing, what the moment no other player has, because of his experience, because of how many Grand Slams he won of the tournaments, and the amount so.

Jannik Sinner told CNBC

Djokovic trails 4-6 in the head-to-head matchups against Sinner. In the Wimbledon semifinal, the Italian ace registered his fifth consecutive win over the Serb. It was also Sinner’s first win over the 24-time Grand Slam champion at SW19.

But also in the shape he’s in with, with his age, it’s just amazing and I would say it’s very inspiring for all of us young players, and we are lucky that we can keep watching someone like Novak, because I believe that, you know, he makes us a better player too.

Djokovic was aiming to reach the Wimbledon final for the seventh consecutive Wimbledon final. He played the championship clashes from 2018 to 2024 (except in 2020, as Wimbledon was not held due to the Covid-19 pandemic).

Djokovic lifted his seventh and last Wimbledon in 2022 by beating Nick Kyrgios. In the last two years, Carlos Alcaraz denied him the win. The 38-year-old has not yet won a Grand Slam title since the 2023 US Open and this year, he has made it to the semifinals of the first three Majors.

Jannik Sinner nearly cried after winning Wimbledon

Jannik Sinner served for the match at 40-15 in the fourth set in the Wimbledon final. Carlos Alcaraz couldn’t repeat what he did in the French Open final as he failed to return the serve, which saw Sinner become the newest Wimbledon champion.

Sinner celebrated his victory by lifting his arms in the air, soaking in all the applause from the Centre Court crowd. After the customary handshake, Sinner kneeled down with a bowed head for quite a few seconds and patted the grass multiple times before getting up and running toward his family and team members. That night, during the Wimbledon Champions’ Dance, the 23-year-old talked about the various emotions he was dealing with right after his win.

Yeah, I nearly cried. Not cried, but nearly. But no, I always say Wimbledon is the tournament. There is a lot of history as we can see, and ready to walk on and it’s very special. And winning there today was truly, I believe, the most special moment of my life on a tennis court.

Sinner has now played the final of every Grand Slam tournament. All he needs now is the French Open title to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, will complete the Career Grand Slam if he lifts the Australian Open. The five-time Grand Slam champion has never progressed beyond the quarterfinal in the Melbourne Slam.

Next is the North American hard-court Swing, where Sinner will be aiming to defend his US Open title. Last year, he breezed past home favorite Taylor Fritz to double his Grand Slam tally. Alcaraz too will be chasing his second US Open title as he had won his first Major at Flushing Meadows in 2022.
