“Biggest meaning we have in our sport,” Jannik Sinner explains the importance of being World No. 1

Jannik Sinner is the new World No.1, and he knows the importance of standing on top. The Italian claimed his first Grand Slam title in this year’s Australian Open and lifted two more titles, and was assured of his ranking when Novak Djokovic withdrew from the Roland Garros quarterfinals.

Sinner, who last played against Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland Garros semifinal and lost in five sets, became the first player from Italy to become World No.1. He has an impressive 33-3 on the season. But Sinner knows that the challenges don’t end here, that he will have to work even harder to make sure he remains on the top and at the same time, bag more Grand Slam trophies.

I think it's the biggest meaning we have in our sport. It's the best number you can have. This is everyone's dream, to be in the position. Being No. 1 in the world is an achievement that you build in one year's time. And now obviously, we'll see how much I can stay there, and then that's a different challenge.
Jannik Sinner said in an interview with the ATP website

Sinner became the No.1 after Djokovic, who won three major trophies last year and remained on the top of the ATP Rankings in spite of losing tournament after tournament, finally found his spot in danger after he lost the Italian Open. He had to defend 2000 points at Roland Garros by reaching the final, but as that did not happen, it helped Sinner dethrone the Serb.
