Jannik Sinner won’t be in action before next week, as his first tournament since his US Open final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz is the China Open. The ATP 500 event in Beijing is scheduled to start on September 24, and Sinner will be the first seed as his arch-rival chose to play the Japan Open instead.

Recently, Sinner had a fun interview with Explora Journeys and was asked ‘This or That’ Questions. He chose return over serve, treadmills over drills, captain’s hat over tennis cap, Caribbean over Mediterranean. Sinner then picked sweet breakfast over savory one, followed by whether he would like to have a week with no pasta or a week with no tennis.

Ah… A week with no tennis means that I can go on cruise ships.

Jannik Sinner replied

Sinner picked sunset over sunrise and chose pool day instead of spa day. The next question was whether he would like to play on the center courts or the open sea, to which the South Tyrol native picked the latter.

Next, he picked fitness studio instead of sunrise yoga. The last question was whether he would like to win ugly or lose beautifully.

Oh… No, I mean… I have to say, winning ugly, because I hate to lose.

Before the ATP 500s on the Asia swing, the team event, the Laver Cup, will get underway on September 19. Sinner, who has yet to make his debut, has once again decided to skip it. At the China Open last year, Sinner lost to Alcaraz after a thrilling final. But after Beijing, the four-time Grand Slam champion clinched the Shanghai Masters by defeating Novak Djokovic.

Sinner will be bidding to win his third title of the season in Beijing after his wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Alcaraz beat Sinner in the remaining two Majors. Sinner played the finals of all Grand Slam events this season, becoming the youngest man in the Open Era to do so.

The 24-year-old also reached the finals of the Italian Open and Cincinnati Masters, losing both to the Murcia native. In Cincinnati, Sinner gave him the walkover.

Yannick Noah on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance

Since 2024, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have split the eight Majors, with Novak Djokovic being the last player to win a Grand Slam title. Also, this year, except for the Australian Open (Sinner beat Alexander Zverev), both the World No.1 and World No.2 faced each other in the finals of the remaining three Majors. Laver Cup’s new captain, Yannick Noah, compared the youngsters to those of the Big 3 (Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer) and explained why he thinks no one can compete with them at present.

For now, there are two of them, not three like back then, with [Andy] Murray in tow. Apart from Alcaraz and Sinner, I don’t see who could win one of the next eight Grand Slams. These two players can reach 20 Grand Slam titles.

Yannick Noah said on Super Moscato Show on RMC

Sinner trails 5-10 in the head-to-head matchups against the Spaniard, winning only Wimbledon in their last eight meetings. In Grand Slam finals, Sinner trails 1-2.

They mustn’t get injured, but I think they’re fresh. I think the coaching staff is top-notch. The structure is super well-oiled. You see, Alcaraz, the kid is mentally happy. He’s happy. Sinner at 24, you get the impression he has the maturity of a 35-year-old. It’s extraordinary to see all that.

Yannick Noah added

Alcaraz has so far played nine finals and has taken home seven titles, including five Big Titles this year. The US Open win helped Alcaraz become the second youngest man to reach the six Grand Slam titles tally, surpassing Nadal.
