World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defended his Australian Open title by defeating World No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the finals. The Italian became the first man since Rafael Nadal at the Roland Garros in 2005 and 2006 to successfully defend his maiden Grand Slam title.
While it was a third Grand Slam title for the Italian, it was a third Grand Slam final defeat for the German. Zverev had been a runner up at the 2020 US Open where he lost to Dominic Thiem, and in 2024 where he lost against Carlos Alcaraz.
Jannik Sinner expressed his gratitude to his team and his family, and described how amazing it was to share this moment with them. He jokingly spoke about trying to convince his coach Darren Cahill to stay longer, for whom this is his last Australian Open as a coach.
Jannik Sinner started off his victory speech at the trophy ceremony by acknowledging Alexander Zverev. He called Zverev an amazing and strong player and encouraged him to work hard, expressing his belief that Zverev would very soon lift a Grand Slam trophy.

Jannik Sinner’s journey with Darren Cahill
Darren Cahill has coached the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Simona Halep before joining Simone Vagnozzi as a coach for Jannik Sinner in July 2022. Cahill coached Agassi to his last Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open 2003.
Agassi became the oldest player ever to be ranked world no. 1 in May 2003, a record that was later surpassed by Roger Federer. Cahill, now 59, will halt his coaching career by the end of 2025.
Jannik Sinner had a phenomenal 2024 season. He clinched the 2024 Australian Open and US Open title. Sinner also secured his first ATP Finals title, concluding the year as the world No. 1. He also won the Miami Open, Cincinnati Open, and Shanghai Masters, among other titles.
After having successfully defended his Australian Open crown, Jannik Sinner has marked a strong start to his 2025 season. The Italian will be a formidable opponent for others on the tour to look out for, especially on hard court tournaments.
