Jannik Sinner gave a weird reaction on the court when the announcer called him the ATP No.1 at the One Point Slam event in Melbourne. The Italian star, who has lost the position since September, gave signs to the other announcers that he wasn’t the top player in the men’s rankings.

Sinner lost the world No.1 status at the US Open last September when he failed to beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The World No.1 fell to the Spaniard in three sets and was unable to defend the championship. He had an opportunity to claim back the position at the ATP Finals, but Alcaraz denied him the position after reaching the final.

The four-time Grand Slam champion became World No.1 for the first time in his career in June 2024 after Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open in the quarter-finals due to an injury he sustained in the fourth round. He cemented his place at No.1 for over a year on tour, spending a total of 66 weeks at the position.

However, at the second edition of the One Point Slam event, the announcer made a mistake, calling Sinner the World No.1 as he was ready to play a game of ‘rock, paper, and scissors’ which would decide who would serve. But he looked to the co-announcers, who then corrected the announcer that Sinner was World No.2.

Sinner took on Pablo Carreno Busta in his opening match at the event. He wasted no time beating the Spaniard on the court. He then went to face an amateur player, Jordan Smith, in the round of 16 and shockingly crashed out after failing to hit his serve properly. Smith went on to beat Amanda Anisimova, who had earlier beaten Daniil Medvedev.

The Australian then claimed a superb point against Pedro Martinez in the semi-finals of the event. In the final, he faced Taiwanese star Joanna Garland, when he hit an excellent serve which the WTA star returned with a backhand shot that went wide, leaving Smith to win the 1 million Australian dollar prize.

Nonetheless, Garland picked up some memorable wins against Alexander Zverev in the second round, before taking out former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios. Also, Iga Swiatek stunned Flavio Cobolli in their match, which got the whole crowd to their feet in joy, while all the female players clapped for her.

Jannik Sinner opens up about having the same locker room as Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in Melbourne

Jannik Sinner arrived at the Australian Open on Sunday (January 11), just a day after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition match in Seoul, South Korea. The 24-year-old is seeking to win the Melbourne Grand Slam for the third consecutive time, having lifted it in 2024 and 2025.

During an interview with the Australian Open, Sinner was shown his locker room (the one he used last year and will use this year). The former World No.1 was asked how he feels having a locker close to his arch-rival, Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic:

I have always been here. Everyone’s kinda here, Carlos is here, Novak is also here, this is a corner we all like. In this kinda things I’m a bit superstitious. In Wimbledon I change a couple of things, the US Open in the beginning. When I see certain things don’t work for a couple of years then I try to change. But here I won’t change, because you know, winning.

Sinner will face a tough challenge at the Australian Open this season as Alcaraz will fight to win the title for the first time in his career. Alcaraz needs to win the Australian Open and become the youngest player to complete a Career Grand Slam. Meanwhile, Sinner will be seeking to kick off his season with a title.
