In Short
  • Jannik Sinner is on a 29-match winning streak in Masters 1000s, aiming to break Novak Djokovic's record.
  • He seeks to become the first man to win six consecutive titles at this level while focusing on constant improvement.
  • Sinner reflects on his journey, acknowledging past doubts and emphasizing the importance of training intensity.

Jannik Sinner got off to an easy start in the ongoing Italian Open, where he is chasing history. He knocked out Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 to schedule his third-round match against Alexei Popyrin.

Sinner is on a 29-match winning streak in the Masters 1000s and needs just three more wins to break Novak Djokovic‘s record of a 31-match winning streak at this level. The Italian ace has already become the first man in history to win the first four Masters 1000s of the season after his win over Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open final.

And now he is aiming to become the first man in history to win six consecutive titles at this level. For him, the recipe for success is constant improvement.

Perfection does not exist. We try to improve all shots; there are small details that make a difference at this level. The priority is to continue consolidating my serve; it is the shot I focus on the most in training. Tennis is like a puzzle; everything has to fit together for it to work well.

Jannik Sinner said at the press conference after his opening-round win in Rome

Despite achieving so much in his young career, the 24-year-old still deals with doubts when he enters a court as the heavy favorite. But he is well aware that pressure is just a part of a player’s career.

You should never take anything for granted before a match. I believe that matches are won from the preceding training sessions, and I have been able to have high-level sessions with [Flavio] Cobolli and other Italian players these days. Increasing the intensity has been key to starting on the right foot.

Jannik Sinner added

Sinner holds a 2-1 head-to-head edge over Popyrin. They have already faced each other this year, in the round of 16 of the Qatar Open, which Sinner won in straight sets before losing to Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals. Since then, he has yet to lose a match.

The last time he lost a Masters 1000 match was in the third round of the 2025 Shanghai Masters. He was forced to retire mid-match due to cramps.

Jannik Sinner reflects on his experiences in the past six years

A few years ago, for Jannik Sinner, it was impossible to imagine that he would achieve incredible results. Since the 2024 season, the South Tyrol native has lifted 14 titles from 19 finals, including four Grand Slam titles.

I have come a long way, but I never thought I would get here. I am realistic; six years ago, it was impossible to imagine that I would be where I am now. I want to continue seeing how far my potential goes and be aware that I gave my best, regardless of whether I win or lose.

Jannik Sinner said at the press conference

Last year in Rome, Sinner reached the final for the first time but failed to defeat his arch-rival, Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew from the event this year due to a wrist injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open. The seven-time Major champion will also not be defending the Roland Garros, where Sinner finished as the runner-up last year.

Sinner is chasing his fourth title on clay in his home tournament. He lifted his second title on the surface at this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters by defeating Alcaraz in straight sets.

In Alcaraz’s absence, the four-time Major champion will be the heavy favorite to win the title and complete the Career Grand Slam. Sinner will complete the Career Golden Masters if he wins the Italian Open and become the second man to do so, after Novak Djokovic.
