Jannik Sinner addressed the press for the first time on Saturday (August 3) since withdrawing from the Paris Olympics due to illness. As the No. 1 seed, he regretted not being able to compete.

Ahead of the Olympics, Sinner was unstoppable. He started the year in great form, winning every tournament he competed in up until Carlos Alcaraz started to match that form and even beat him in a few tournaments. However, Sinner’s record of playing for his country was good given his last Davis Cup win and Italy was hoping to get a medal from him.

Unfortunately, the Italian ace fell sick and could not compete in this Olympics, making Novak Djokovic the No. 1 seed. Speaking about it, Sinner revealed that it broke his heart to not compete, but is proud of the other Italians for contributing notably to the Games.

I saw some of the Olympics, although I didn't watch much tennis. It broke my heart not to be able to go to Paris, the Games were one of my main goals of the season.

Fortunately, other Italians stepped up in the absence of Sinner. Lorenzo Musetti, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the semi-final, won bronze for Italy in singles. In women’s doubles, the duo of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani will compete in the final for a possible gold medal on Sunday (August 4).

Italy won two medals in tennis. One was bronze and they might get another gold or silver depending on the women’s doubles result. While Sinner’s absence did not make much of an effect, the ATP World No. 1 was upset about not being able to make it on time.

One of the first couple of tournaments is in Canada and Sinner is the top seed at it. Along with him, there is also Alexander Zverev, who is the second seed in the tournament. Other than them, players like Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Andrey Rublev may also be a bit of a challenge.

Nonetheless, Sinner also revealed that he would tune into the Olympics women’s doubles if he got time. While the Italians are excited about another medal opportunity, the main attraction of the day would be the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, competing for gold in men’s singles.
