Italy has booked a spot in the Davis Cup Finals, scheduled to start on November 18 in Bologna. The two-time defending champion will lock horns with Austria in the quarterfinals.
A win over Austria will pit them against France or Belgium in the semifinals. Last year, they defeated the Netherlands 2-0 to win their third title. What’s uncertain for Italy is Jannik Sinner‘s participation.
Sinner is in Beijing, bidding to win his third title of the season. After breezing past 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, the World No.2 was asked about his Davis Cup participation at the press conference.
My presence in Bologna for the Davis Cup? I’m not thinking about it at the moment; I still have to decide honestly.
Sinner was part of Italy’s team that won the Davis Cup in the previous two years. Last year, Matteo Berrettini and Sinner’s singles wins did the job for Italy as they defeated Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Griekspoor, respectively.
In 2023, Miomir Kecmanovic’s win over Lorenzo Musetti gave Serbia a 1-0 lead, but later, Sinner tied the score by going past Novak Djokovic in five sets. The pair of Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego then sealed victory for the Italian team after they clinched a straight-set win over the pair of Djokovic and Kecmanovic.
Jannik Sinner on what he has improved after US Open defeat
Jannik Sinner now holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead over Marin Cilic after their second-round match at the China Open. The China Open is Sinner’s first tournament since his US Open run, where he lost a four-set final against Carlos Alcaraz.

In the early rounds, you try to put a lot of focus, you have to find rhythm and timing, assessing the court conditions. I tried to prepare as best as I could, I arrived very early here to get used to the conditions. I’m happy to have been able to show this performance. Cilic is a high-level player.
Jannik Sinner said during the press conference
Sinner is trying to make his game unpredictable, as he blamed the predictable nature of his game after his defeat to Alcaraz at Flushing Meadows. At present, he is focusing on his service games a lot.
I think a lot about the serve right now. Sometimes I’m a bit slow, but I hope it becomes more and more automatic. I’m trying to mix it up well and vary it, but everyone does that. I’m happy to be able to work and to have a great team by my side; we keep pushing.

The four-time Grand Slam champion will next be locking horns with Terence Atmane, whom he defeated in the semifinals of this year’s Cincinnati Masters to take a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head matchups. Sinner is chasing his second title in Beijing after his victory in 2023.
Last year in the tournament, the 24-year-old lost a thrilling three-set final against Alcaraz. So far this year, Sinner has played six finals, winning only the Australian Open and Wimbledon, by beating Alexander Zverev and Alcaraz, respectively.
The four finals he lost were at the hands of Alcaraz: at the Italian Open, French Open, Cincinnati Masters (gave a walkover), and the US Open. This year, Sinner and Alcaraz have featured in a combined 15 finals, with the latter winning the most (seven) on the men’s tour.
Sinner also played the finals of all four Grand Slam events, becoming the youngest man to do so. After Beijing, his next destination will be Shanghai, where he will play as the defending champion (beat Novak Djokovic last year).
Winning both the China Open and the Shanghai Masters will make him once again the World No.1 player. He lost the ranking to Alcaraz after his US Open defeat.
