Jannik Sinner was heavily disappointed after Carlos Alcaraz came from two sets down to beat him at the French Open final. The Italian star was hoping to claim his first natural court title, having won his three Grand Slams on hard courts, but was stopped by the Spaniard. He revealed after the loss that his family will help him delete the memory of disappointment.

Sinner was on the brink of beating Alcaraz at the Roland Garros final after winning the first two sets. Despite Alcaraz winning the third set, the 23-year-old also found himself in the lead in 6-4, 7-6(4), 4-6, 5-4(40-0) and ready to serve for the championship match, but fell agonizingly short, squandering three championship points.

That allowed Alcaraz to save three championship points on the way to his brilliant 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-2) win on the Court Philippe-Chatrier. It was the second consecutive loss against a Spaniard in the space of three weeks. The Italian had lost to him in straight sets at the Italian Open final in Rome.

After the match, Sinner was asked how he would get over the defeat as he was emotional during his on-court runners-up interview. He revealed that his family will help him gain back his happiness as he plans to return home after the Roland Garros:

My family, the people who know me… now they are helping, you know. It’s a giving sometimes. And sometimes you take something. Now it’s my time to take something from the close people I have. They will for sure be happy that I’ll come back home. With my family, with everyone. We are just a very simple family. My dad wasn’t here because he was working today. Nothing about our success changes in the family. It was nice to see my mom here. I guess my dad was watching on TV if he finished work.

Despite Sinner’s loss against Alcaraz, he remains in his position as World No.1 in the ATP rankings with a 2,030 points lead above the Spaniard in No.2. As defending champion Alcaraz was unable to add points after his victory, while Sinner gained 500 points after doing better than his last year’s semi-final finish.

Also, the Italian leaves the Roland Garros with an 18-2 win-loss record this season. He was trying to become the fifth man in the Open Era to win three consecutive Grand Slams, having claimed the US Open last September and the Australian Open in January. He hopes to continue in this form at the Wimbledon Championship, which starts on June 30.

Jannik Sinner says his match against Carlos Alcaraz was mentally tasking

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz played for five hours and 29 minutes in the Roland Garros final, making it the longest final in the tournament’s history. Both players looked tired in the fifth set, but they still fought for every point. They were much better physically than when they faced each other in the semi-final of the tournament last year.

Sinner was asked during his aforementioned press conference whether he felt tired at the time. He revealed that he was physically fine throughout the intense high-level match:

Physically I was quite fine. Of course, tired. He was tired too, because it was physical match. It was [a] mental match. You can’t really change it. I’m still happy to be part of this match. I think it was a very, very high-level match, was long… We try to delete it somehow and take the positive and keep going. There are no other ways.

Alcaraz now leads Sinner in the tally for the most Grand Slam titles, 5-3, and also improved his head-to-head record against the World No.1, 8-4. The pair rivalry is currently the biggest in the sport having met for the first time at the Paris Masters in 2021.
