Jannik Sinner has now added two Davis Cup titles to his trophy cabinet as on Sunday (November 24), Italy defended their title with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands. With this win, Sinner has capped off an amazing season as he won eight tour-level singles titles, including the Australian Open, the US Open, and the ATP Finals.
During the match, Sinner defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2), 6-2 following compatriot Matteo Berrettini‘s win over Botic van de Zandschulp. After clinching the title, the World No. 1 reflected on the win.
Berrettini wasn’t a part of the team in 2023 but he and Sinner this time have won all the singles matches they have played, including the the doubles match.
Jannik Sinner lauded his team for Davis Cup win
Italy has become the first country to defend its Davis Cup title since the Czech Republic in 2013. Sinner lauded his team but admitted that facing Tallon Griekspoor was difficult for him.
With the Italian women winning the Billie Jean King Cup, Italy became the first country to win both the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup in the same year after Russia in 2021.
Sinner has now joined an elite list after defending the Davis Cup title with Italy. He became the fifth man in tennis history to win the Davis Cup as World No. 1 after John McEnroe, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, and Rafael Nadal.
Sinner also matched Roger Federer‘s feat. The Swiss maestro was the only man in the Open Era to end a season without losing any match in straight sets. He did so in 2005 and Sinner joined the list after his Davis Cup win. Sinner also ended the season with a 73-6 singles record, the most since Andy Murray‘s 78 in 2016.
