Novak Djokovic continues to remain trophyless on the ATP Tour this season. On Sunday (October 13), he was up against Jannik Sinner in the final of the Shanghai Masters and many tennis fans expected him to emerge victorious.
However, the World No. 1 denied him the chance by clinching victory in an hour and 37 minutes with a 7-6(7-4), 6-3 scoreline. In the process, he became the youngest champion in the history of the tournament.
Sinner is also the first Italian to win in Shanghai. It is Sinner’s seventh title of the season, including two Grand Slams (Australian Open and the US Open). He is the first man since Andy Murray in 2016 to win more than six titles in a calendar year.
Sinner reached back-to-back finals in China. He previously advanced to the summit clash at the China Open where he lost in three sets to Carlos Alcaraz. After the win against Djokovic, he said winning the tie-break in the first set boosted his confidence and helped him beat the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
He was serving great the first set, I couldn’t find a way to break him. I played a really good tie-break which gave me confidence to start off well in the second set.
Jannik Sinner said after the match

Jannik Sinner talks about the secret to beating Novak Djokovic
Jannik Sinner has now leveled the head-to-head record against Novak Djokovic to 4-4. It was also his second victory over the Serb this season. After the win, the youngster talked about how he defeated the Serbian legend for the third time in a row.

It’s tough to tell you a secret about [Djokovic] because he doesn’t have any weaknesses. You have to try and use the small chances that he gives you, but there are not many during the match. He is a legend of our sport, he’s very tough to play against, so I am very happy.
Jannik Sinner added
Djokovic was on his quest to become the third man to win 100 tour-level titles after Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors. It was his first tournament since his third-round exit at the US Open.
Djokovic has now just one title this season, the gold medal he won at the Paris Olympics by beating Carlos Alcaraz. The 37-year-old has made it to only two finals on the ATP Tour this season, the first being at Wimbledon where he lost to Alcaraz for the second successive year.
