Sinner arrived at the US Open amid some controversy. He faced questions after testing positive for low levels of a banned steroid. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) investigated and found that the 23-year-old had “no fault or negligence.” It was determined that his physiotherapist had used a spray containing clostebol. This ruling drew criticism from other players, highlighting issues with the sport’s substance testing policies.

Earlier this year, Sinner won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, becoming the second Italian man to win a Major in the Open Era. At just 23 years old, his recent success symbolizes a shift in men’s tennis.

Sinner and Alcaraz have shared two Grand Slams each this season. The Italian started off by winning the Australian Open. However, Alcaraz turned the tables by winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back to back. His Wimbledon title was special, considering he was the defending champion at this year’s event.

Sinner returned to form in the North American tour, winning the Cincinnati Open crown before landing his second Grand Slam title at the US Open. Both players have a perfect 100% record in Grand Slam finals, with Alcaraz winning all four major finals and Sinner doing the same in two of his respective finals.

Alcaraz and Sinner have met twice this year, with the Spaniard winning both of those matches at Indian Wells and Roland Garros, respectively. However, the Italian has enjoyed a more consistent season with six ATP tour titles and two Masters 1000 crowns. Alcaraz’s only title outside his two Grand Slam titles came at Indian Wells.
