World No. 1 Jannik Sinner became the first Italian to win the Australian Open last year after defeating Daniil Medvedev in a five-set encounter. Now, he has joined a long list of legends by successfully defending his Australian Open title.
Shortly after embracing his opponent, Alexander Zverev, at the net, the Italian quickly went over to his technical staff, who were waiting at the side of the court. Sinner hugged them emotionally, especially Darren Cahill, who is confirmed to be with the top seed for this final season.

After that hug, he went over to the players’ box and was embraced by his family. His family and team have been extremely important in keeping Sinner grounded amid the chaos surrounding his doping scandal in August.
The Italian has been under scrutiny since August after testing positive twice for clostebol, with a potential suspension looming over him. However, thanks to the support of his close circle, Sinner has managed to set all that aside and play some fantastic tennis.
Jannik Sinner makes history at the Australian Open
Jannik Sinner claimed another Australian Open title in impressive fashion on Sunday. The 23-year-old defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 to successfully defend his title in Melbourne. The Italian was solid from the baseline and did not face a single break point in the match. He is now the first Italian to win three Grand Slam titles.
Sinner’s resilience has been key to his success over the past year. The World No. 1 has won all three Grand Slam finals he has played. At just 23, he joins an elite group of eight players in the Open Era to achieve this. His calm and focused game is matched by remarkable mental strength.
With this victory, Sinner extends his winning streak to 21 matches at hard-court Grand Slam events. After winning both the Australian Open and the US Open in 2024, he is now the fifth player in the Open Era to win three straight hard-court Grand Slams. Novak Djokovic was the last to do so, in 2015-16.
Zverev showed flashes of brilliance during the match, especially in the second set. He came close to turning the tide but couldn’t capitalize. The World No. 2, aiming to become the fifth German man to win a Grand Slam, now has a 0-3 record in major finals. His wait for a Grand Slam title continues.
