Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz may not have been the center of attention in the tennis world on Saturday (October 18). The day belonged to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who shared wholesome moments on the court as they ended one of the greatest rivalries of all time in the third-place match of the Six King Slam.
However, Sinner and Alcaraz continued to demonstrate why they are the benchmark in the tennis world, much like their peers a decade ago. Sinner won the Six Kings Slam final, defeating Alcaraz 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. After the match, the World No.1 shared insights into how he prepares for his matches against the World No.2, and expressed how their rivalry can elevate the sport to new heights.
Sinner and Alcaraz have been the standout players of the 2024 season, winning all four Grand Slam titles between themselves. The Italian claimed the Australian Open and US Open, while the Spaniard won Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
The duo have also captured four of the eight Masters 1000 titles so far this year, with the BNP Paribas Masters still to be played. Both have already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals and are almost certain to finish the season ranked in the top two.
Jannik Sinner shrugs off injury concerns in the Six Kings Slam final
World No.1 Jannik Sinner entered the finals of the Six Kings Slam under a cloud of uncertainty. The Italian defeated Novak Djokovic for the fourth consecutive time on Thursday (October 17). However, that memorable win came at a cost.
During the match against Djokovic, Sinner showed signs of fatigue. In the second set tiebreak, he was seen placing his hands on his knees, which was understandable given that he had played in the finals of both Beijing and Shanghai in the past two weeks.
In the third set of the match, Sinner’s fellow professional, Liam Broady, pointed out something during one of the changeovers. He claimed that the World No.1 was seen self-massaging his leg with his elbow. Despite these issues, Sinner came out prepared against Carlos Alcaraz. The battles between the World No.1 and World No.2 have all gone to deciding sets in 2024.
