World No. 1 Jannik Sinner revealed a heartwarming conversation he had with his coach, Darren Cahill, before the US Open final. The Italian won his second Grand Slam title in New York, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
In their conversation, Sinner shared that the Australian coach emphasized the role of his parents as the biggest support in his life. The Italian superstar has often spoken about the importance of his family during his title-winning moments.
The best compliment I got was from Darren before the final. He said: Do you know who the two people who are most proud of you are? Your parents. That gave me chills. Him being a father, it had a special effect on me because he knows exactly what I've been through.Jannik Sinner said in his post-match interview
Sinner has been under scrutiny for almost a month due to a doping controversy. He was tested positive twice for a banned steroid but avoided a ban from tennis authorities.
While the tennis world criticized him, Cahill was one of those who stood by him. After Sinner won the championship point on Sunday (September 8), the Australian coach was seen bowing his head and shedding tears of joy alongside the other coach, Simone Vagnozzi.
Darren Cahill hails ‘champion’s mindset’ of Jannik Sinner after US Open win
Australian coach Darren Cahill spoke to ESPN about Jannik Sinner‘s journey at the US Open. He highlighted his mentee’s strong mindset throughout the tournament. Cahill praised the way Sinner handled the challenges during his run in New York.
He was ready today. This morning he practised well. This morning we were talking to Andre Agassi in the locker room. He was talking about his game, and his mentality, and his composure also in the big moments.Darren Cahill said in an interview with ESPN
Since Cahill joined Sinner’s team in July 2022, the renowned coach has helped Sinner reach new heights. Under his guidance, the 23-year-old won his first major title at the Australian Open in January. In June, he climbed to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time. Sinner capped off his impressive season by winning the US Open on Sunday.
Even when he was tested in that third set, I still felt like he felt like he could get back into it and turn it around which he was able to do. So, he’s got this champion mindset that I think a lot of players don’t have. Certain players do have it for sure. But I believe he was born with it and he loves those situations and those momentsDarren Cahill added
Cahill has had a successful coaching career. He previously helped Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, and Simona Halep achieve the World No. 1 ranking. Cahill joined Sinner’s team to bring added experience to an already skilled group.
Sinner has been working with his fellow Italian, Simone Vagnozzi, since early 2022. However, he sacked his fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara, and physio, Giacomo Naldi after the recent doping controversy.
