Top seed Jannik Sinner won the US Open title for the first time in his career after a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Taylor Fritz. It is his second Grand Slam title overall and the sixth ATP Tour title of the season.
After securing the win, Sinner went to the player’s box and embraced his girlfriend, Anna Kalinskaya. The pair shared a kiss before the Italian superstar shook hands with the rest of his staff.
On Friday (September 6), Sinner became the first Italian man to reach the US Open final. Today, he became the first man since Guillermo Vilas in 1977 to win two Grand Slam titles on his first two attempts in the same season. Jannik Sinner embraces the mental game at the US Open after doping controversy
World No.1 Jannik Sinner has had an exhausting North American season. After his Cincinnati Open title win, news broke out that the Italian had tested positive for a banned substance twice but escaped a ban from the ATP tour. Fast forward three weeks, and he is the US Open champion.
This title means so much, because the last period of my career was really not easy. I love tennis, I practice a lot for these stages. I understood, especially in this tournament, how important the mental part is in this sport. I’m very happy, very proud to share this moment with my team.Jannik Sinner said in his post-tournament interview
Many former and current tennis players, including Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, criticized Sinner’s case decision. Despite escaping the ban, 400 points were taken away from the Italian’s ATP rankings that he won at Indian Wells (where he tested positive).
However, Sinner put all the controversies behind him and played a terrific US Open tournament. The right-hander dropped only two sets in the entire tournament, one each against Mackenzie McDonald in the first round and Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinal.
