Jannik Sinner surprised by “strange” first two sets in his win against Daniil Medvedev
Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev enjoy a great rivalry. The two players have played against each other 13 times and while the Russian had a 6-0 head-to-head record till 2023, tables have turned quickly with Sinner now trailing just 7-6.
With the two stars having a history of pushing each other to their limits whenever they face off, a tough and close contest was expected in the US Open quarterfinals. However, interestingly, the two players won a set each easily, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
This continued in the third set as well, which Sinner won 6-1. The Italian then managed to ride the momentum and seal the match in four sets. After the match, he expressed surprise at the ‘strange’ way the contest began.
It was very tough. We know each other quite well. We played in Australia and London this year. We knew it would be very physical. It was strange the first two sets because whoever made the first break started to roll. I’m really happy. Thanks everyone for staying so long. I really appreciate it.Jannik Sinner said in his on-court interview
Sinner has now defeated Medvedev three times in 2024. He first beat the Russian in the Australian Open final to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title. The 23-year-old then got the better of Medvedev in the Miami Open semifinals.
After Medvedev ended the Italian’s run at Wimbledon, the World No. 1 has now come out on top at the US Open. Sinner is set to face 25th seed Jack Draper for a place in the final.
