Jannik Sinner became the first player to progress to the semifinals at this ATP Finals. He has won all of his matches with ease and is waiting for John Newcombe Group’s two semifinals.

Sinner, along with Taylor Fritz from Ilie Nastase Group, have advanced to the last four after Daniil Medvedev‘s defeat. Fritz’s win over Alex de Minaur took Sinner to the semis, while the Italian’s straight-set victory against Medvedev helped Fritz reach the semifinals.

In the other Group, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, and Carlos Alcaraz are in contention for a spot in the semis. Sinner leads in the head-to-head encounters against Ruud and Rublev but is 4-6 versus Alcaraz and 2-4 versus Zverev.

Ahead of John Newcombe Group’s last group-stage matches, Sinner was asked about his preference on who he will play in the semifinals.

No preference. I mean, it doesn’t really…you know, whoever is going to be on the other side of the net…I will just try to play my best tennis. You know, I’m going to watch like all in the other days because I like to watch tennis, I’m also a tennis fan so hopefully tomorrow there are going to be some great matches, some great battles and hopefully I can show them good tennis then.

Who will play against Jannik Sinner in the semifinals?

While Zverev has won two matches already (over Ruud and Rublev), he has virtually qualified for the semifinals. But a straight-set defeat to Alcaraz, along with Ruud’s straight-set victory over Rublev could eliminate him.

Alcaraz is 1-1 as he suffered a defeat to Ruud and won against Rublev. Rublev, having lost both of the first two matches he played against Zverev and Alcaraz, is on the brink of elimination but still, his chances to qualify are hanging by a thread.

Between Alcaraz and Ruud, whoever has the better result, will qualify for the semifinals. Alcaraz will have to beat Zverev in straight sets and will be waiting for Ruud’s defeat to Rublev. The Spaniard would then be standing on top of his group.

Ruud can also stay alive in the tournament if he loses to Rublev in three sets and if Zverev beats Alcaraz in three sets. But Zverev’s defeat and Rublev’s defeat would mean the latter’s elimination. Alcaraz and Ruud’s position will be determined by the percentage of games won.
