Asserting his prowess on hard court, Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open crown. The World No. 1 defeated second seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets in the finals.

At the post match press conference, Sinner was asked how important it was for him to win the Roland Garros and Wimbledon. While Sinner clinched his third Grand Slam title after winning the 2025 Australian Open, he is yet to win a Grand Slam on a surface other than hard courts.

It’s one thing I always think about. You have to be a complete player, not only 1 surface. Last year wasn’t bad on clay & grass. I can do better, yes, but let’s see.

Amongst his 19 career titles, 17 of them have been won on hard court. Jannik Sinner won the Croatia Open in 2022 on clay court and the Halle Open 2024 on grass court. His best run at the Roland Garros and Wimbledon were in 2023 and 2024 respectively where he reached the semifinal.

Sinner emphasized the importance of being a complete player on all surfaces. He remarked that he still has to improve and see how it works on other surfaces. He expressed his intent to put a lot of energy in trying to find the right ways and hopefully going far in the other Grand Slams.

The Italian’s next Grand Slam title came at the 2024 US Open where he defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets at the final. At age 23, Sinner became the youngest man ever to win both hard-court majors in the same year.

Meanwhile Jannik Sinner’s opponent Alexander Zverev reached his first Grand Slam final in 2020 at the US Open. He lost to Dominic Thiem, who won his first and only major title.

The German’s next Grand Slam final was at the Roland Garros 2024 where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. While it was a heartbreaking loss for Zverev once again at a final, this time at the Australian Open, defending champion Jannik Sinner consoled him and acknowledged his strength as a player in his victory speech, expressing his belief that Zverev will soon lift the Grand Slam trophy.
