In Short
  • Jannik Sinner vomited during his semifinal match against Daniil Medvedev at the Italian Open.
  • Sinner's physical issues have been a recurring problem, impacting his performance in multiple tournaments.
  • Casper Ruud advanced to the Italian Open final after defeating Luciano Darderi in straight sets.

World No.1 Jannik Sinner is bidding to reach his second Italian Open final. However, the historic 32-match unbeaten streak in the Masters 1000 level seems to be finally taking its toll on him.

During his semifinal against Daniil Medvedev, the Italian was seen throwing up in the second set. Eventually, the physical condition hampered his performance, as he lost the second set.

Medvedev is only the third player to take a set off Sinner in his historic run in the Masters 1000 run since November. The other two came at Monte Carlo and Madrid, respectively.

Sinner has played the most matches on the ATP Tour this year. Now, heading into Roland Garros, there is a huge question mark on his physical health.

Jannik Sinner’s physical problems

Jannik Sinner‘s physical problems are well-documented. The World No.1 endured cramps during the Australian Open earlier this year, where he was on the verge of withdrawing from his match.

Last year, there were many examples in which Sinner’s physical issues came to the surface. The first one came in the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz, where he withdrew after five games.

He also retired from the Shanghai Open later that year due to cramps. Hence, his title defense in the Chinese city came to an end.

He also had physical problems in last year’s Australian Open fourth round against Holger Rune. However, he prevailed in that match in four sets.

Casper Ruud books his spot in the Italian Open final

Casper Ruud booked his place in the Italian Open final for the first time after dismantling Luciano Darderi in straight sets. The Norwegian, who had previously stumbled at the semi-final stage three times, made sure history did not repeat itself with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The match began with both players trading early breaks, but Ruud quickly seized control at 4-1 before rain interrupted play. The nearly two-hour delay did little to disrupt his momentum, as he returned to court and closed out the opening set with ease.

Ruud carried that dominance into the second set, racing to a 4-0 lead. Darderi briefly lifted the home crowd with a love-hold, but the Italian debutant could not sustain the fight against Ruud’s relentless baseline pressure.

The closing stages saw Ruud tested, with multiple deuces and a saved break point, but he held firm and converted his third match point. He now awaits either Sinner or Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s championship clash.
