Italian tennis ace Jannik Sinner registered his 50th win of the 2024 season by beating Alex Michelsen on Thursday (August 29) at the US Open. Sinner cruised into the third round at the Flushing Meadows with this 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 win over the American.

The World No. 1 began his US Open campaign with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 wi against Mackenzie McDonald in the first round. However, despite the two pretty comfortable wins, Sinner has claimed that he is yet to play at his best level in New York.

I feel like my level is not there where I want to be at, regardless of the results. We just go day-by-day at the moment. Tomorrow I have one day off, [I will] try to get into the rhythm again, having a good ball coming to me, trying to hit it in the way I want to. But every win is great, it is good to be in a position. Now Round 3 is starting, I am looking forward to raise my level day by day, so let's see what I can do.

Sinner took an hour and 40 minutes to beat Michelsen in the second round. Despite a slow start, the Italian benefitted from Michelsen’s lack of depth and power to register a straight-sets win.

Sinner reached the top of the ATP rankings in June this year, becoming the first Italian man or woman to reach World No. 1 in singles since computerized rankings began in 1973. He is the first man to complete 50 wins on the tour this year.

Although the Italian could not play at the Paris Olympics, Sinner has a great shot at the title in New York. He said that he loved playing at the event as he made his Grand Slam debut there.

I always love New York, the first Grand Slam I played in the main draw, so I have great memories and I always enjoy playing here.

The 23-year-old will be hoping to end the season in the same way he started, with a Grand Slam title win. He next faces Christopher O’Connell in the third round.
