Jannik Sinner won the inaugural Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia after defeating Carlos Alcaraz 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the final. The Italian broke a three-match losing streak against his long-term rival, though the win won’t count in the official records since it was an unofficial tournament.
The good news doesn’t end there for Sinner. The World No.1 will take home 6 million dollars in prize money from Riyadh. All six players were guaranteed 1.5 million, with the winner receiving 6 million.
The 6 million dollar prize is the largest in tennis history, surpassing all the Grand Slam events. Saudi Arabian tennis is set to rise even further, with the WTA Finals taking place in the Middle East later this year.
As for Sinner, he has yet to announce his schedule for the remainder of the season. He secured the Year-End No.1 ranking after winning the Shanghai Masters earlier this month.
Jannik Sinner’s 2024 season gets better and better
Jannik Sinner is having one of the greatest tennis seasons of the century, and it continues to get better. The Italian claimed his 8th title of the season after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the finals of the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia.
However, this title won’t count in the official record books as it was an exhibition event. On the ATP Tour, Sinner has won seven ATP titles, including two Grand Slam titles and three Masters 1000 events.
He joins Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as one of the few players to win both hard-court Grand Slam titles in a single season. Of his seven titles this season, six have come on hard courts, with the exception being the Halle Open, which is played on grass.
Unfortunately for the World No.1, his remarkable season has been overshadowed by controversy, as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is close to issuing a verdict on his doping scandal. WADA is expected to impose at least a 12-month ban on Sinner after he tested positive twice for an illegal substance in March this year.
