Jannik Sinner has shown little concern about his stomach problem, which he struggled with during his semi-finals clash at the China Open. The former World No.1 had to fight hard against Alex de Minaur to reach the final of the ATP 500 tournament, where he will face American teenager Learner Tien on Wednesday (October 1st).

Sinner had a perfect 10-0 record against De Minaur before their clash at the China Open. He was on course to beat the Australian star for the eleventh time after winning the first set quite easily. But De Minaur reacted well in the second set, breaking Sinner for the first time in the match.

He made sure not to let his momentum slip, but Sinner was struggling with a stomach issue during the match and held his abdomen on several occasions in between serves. It was in the third set that Sinner finally got himself and gave a composed performance, beating the Australian star 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and 20 minutes.

In the other semi-final clash at the China Open, Tien took on Daniil Medvedev and was on the verge of losing the match as he was down 5-7, 3-5. But, Medvedev began to struggle with cramps on the court, which gave him a chance to rally back into the match. The Russian star eventually retired from the clash while Tien led 5-7, 7-5, 4-0.

Sinner will now face Tien in the final of the China Open. But ahead of their clash, Sinner was asked about whether his digestive issues would be a major concern for him on Wednesday (October 1). The World No.2 revealed that it was nothing serious as it was just diarrhea:

It’s nothing serious. I had diarrhea for the past few days and lost some fluid, but I feel fine. I also had a bit of tension. The mix of tension and the past few days weren’t easy, but yes, I feel fine. I’m not worried about tomorrow. Everything is fine.

Sinner’s hopes of closing the gap between him and Carlos Alcaraz in World No.1 got more difficult after the Spaniard claimed his eighth title of the season at the Tokyo Open in Japan. Alcaraz had decided to compete at the tournament instead of the China Open, which he won last season after beating Sinner. Alcaraz’s gamble turned out to be a successful one as he dropped just one set in Tokyo.

Jannik Sinner satisfied with his performance against Alex de Minaur

Jannik Sinner had acknowledged that it would be a very difficult match between him and Alex de Minaur before their clash on Tuesday (September 30). The China Open was the 24-year-old’s first tournament since the US Open final loss against Carlos Alcaraz. Also, he had dropped his first set at the China Open against Terence Atmane.

But against De Minaur, Sinner showed stern determination and grit overcoming the Australian star in three sets. During the aforementioned press conference, he revealed that the match was a high-level clash:

It felt like a very high-level match. Many great rallies, many chances for both. I had mine in the 2nd but couldn’t use them. He also had more chances. In the 3rd I tried to raise my level, broke him early, which gave me confidence on serve. Very happy today, it was different than usual against him, a very even match.

Sinner has reached the final of the China Open for the third consecutive year. He’s aiming to win his third title of the season at the ATP 500 tournament. His only two titles this year have come from Grand Slam tournaments, the Australian Open and Wimbledon precisely. Also, he has not won an ATP 500 tournament for over a year.
