Italian tennis ace Jannik Sinner lost to Andrey Rublev in the Montreal Masters Quarterfinal on Saturday. It was the World No.1’s fifth defeat of the season. While it is normal for any other player on the tour, it became a worrying sign for Sinner, who is at the top of the rankings. Nevertheless, the 22-year-old is not worried about that but instead, Sinner fears the injury that has been plaguing him for a long time.
After the defeat to Rublev on Saturday, Sinner gave a worrying update about his fitness level. The Italian revealed that he is “far from 100%” and subtly hinted that he won’t be able to play at the Cincinnati Masters. Sinner, however, is focused on returning to New York for the 2024 US Open.
My general form is far from 100% and it's not where I want it to be, I was in bed for a week. Rublev played very well, I raised the level in the second set but today I'm not able to maintain that level. After playing one or two long points, I had maybe a three or four-minute drop, which then cost me a break. The most important event, however, remains the US Open: working miracles from here to Cincinnati will not be possible. The goal is to be back at 100% in view of New York.Jannik Sinner said in the post-match press conference.
Last month, Sinner missed out on the 2024 Paris Olympics after getting diagnosed with tonsillitis. He returned to action with the ATP 1000 tournament in Canada with the hope of preparing for the US Open. However, the groin injury seems to have dented his plans.
Jannik Sinner not bothered about the start-and-stop season he is having
While Jannik Sinner has been troubled with injuries, forcing him to withdraw from some important tournaments, the Italian is not too worried about it. He is instead happy about performing well in whatever tournaments he has played in the 2024 season so far.
After bowing out of the Canada Masters, Sinner highlighted the fact that he has made it to the quarterfinals of every tournament he has played this season. The World No.1 also reiterated that this defeat in the Canada Masters quarterfinal was only his fifth and thus, he is more focused on regaining fitness before the US Open rather than working on anything else.
We often forget about the season I'm having. I've won a lot of games and lost very few, with today we're at 5 defeats in the season. I don't see the problem: I also know that I shouldn't look at these statistics, but up until now my year has been very consistent. I've reached at least the quarterfinals or better in every tournament I've played. I'm in a position where I want to play to win titles, of course, but right now it's even more important to get back to the top level physically and mentally.Jannik Sinner said
The Italian ace, however, is well aware that he won’t be able to attain 100% fitness before the Cincinnati Masters. Notably, the ATP 1000 tournament will be played from 12 to 19 August. Novak Djokovic is the defending champion at the Masters tournament.
