Amaeur Jordan Smith surprised the best tennis players in the world at the famous Rod Laver Arena to take home one million Australian dollars in the Million Dollar One Point Slam. In the exhibition, where amateurs also met the professionals, Smith knocked out the top players of the game, including World No.2 Jannik Sinner, who ended up netting the serve.

Players from both the ATP and WTA gathered together, with fans in that cheerful atmosphere also enjoying some priceless reactions that Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz were giving. Sinner also celebrated one win, unlike the Sinner way.

Nick Kyrgios also featured in the exhibition event and was eliminated by WTA World No. 117 Joanna Garland. When Kyrgios’ ball landed outside the line, Jasmine Paolini tapped Sinner on his arm, the clip of which has been doing the rounds on social media.

The tennis world is well aware of Kyrgios’ feud with the four-time Grand Slam champion, and since the doping case of the latter came into the light, the Aussie incessantly targeted him. Kyrgios, like many others, questioned the handling of Sinner’s case, saying he is convinced the anti-doping agencies gave him preferential treatment because of his high-profile status. But quite a few times, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist lauded Sinner, backing him to be one of the best players in tennis history.

Kyrgios has pulled out of the Australian Open singles but is set to feature in doubles. Prior to Melbourne, he was in Brisbane, where he played his first singles match since losing the second round of the 2025 Miami Open to Karen Khachanov. In Brisbane, Kyrgios suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Aleksandar Kovacevic, while in doubles, he and compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis lost in the second round.

Tommy Paul on Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s dominance

The ATP tour at present has been dominated by only two players, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, because, since the 2024 season, they have won a combined 26 titles from 35 finals, splitting the last eight Majors.

America’s Tommy Paul, who has met both Grand Slam winners multiple times, trails 1-4 against Sinner and 2-5 against Alcaraz. During his interview on Gill Gross’s YouTube channel, the World No.21 analysed what makes Sincaraz, tough opponents.

They’re very good players, and they adapt. They don’t let you play the same tennis as in the first set. Many times I feel like the first set is my way, and then it’s easy to notice in the second set that Sinner or Alcaraz start playing the match much more their way and more aggressively, changing direction more.

Tommy Paul said

Paul started his campaign for the 2026 season at the Brisbane International, where the fourth seed suffered an exit in the opening round with a three-set defeat to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. He is in Adelaide and has reached the quarterfinals after eliminating Reilly Opelka and Aleksandar Vukic. The second will square off against Tomas Machac.

Basically, they take control in the second set; it’s very difficult not to let them do that. Especially after a set, you can literally see how their mindset changes, and once they change their mindset, it’s hard to stop them from doing what they want.

Tommy Paul added

The Australian Open starts on January 18. Paul made the semifinals in 2023 and last year lost in the quarterfinals. Sinner will be entering the event as the two-time defending champion, and a third title will make him the second man in the Open Era to complete the three-peat after Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz has yet to reach the semifinals, losing twice in the quarterfinal stage.
