In a football game, the score at the end is generally a result of who scored the most points. Usually, that comes down to either elite plays from the offense or defense. Special teams do have a say from time to time. But lately in the NFL, kicking has taken a surprisingly important role in helping to decide games. Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce decided to talk about it.

As the last ESPN Monday Night Football coverage was in Kansas City, he and brother Travis Kelce linked up to shoot their latest episode of New Heights. When talking about several aspects of the game they saw this week, senior Kelce talked about kickers.

Kickers are making like 60-yarders like it’s routine. We need to narrow these field goals, it’s too easy to kick field goals now. Kickers should not be influencing football games as much as they are right now. We need to make kickers way less valuable. That is not what football is about.

Jason Kelce said.

The retired center was joking about it as he did say at the end that he loved the kickers currently in the NFL. It’s just that he feels their influence has grown too much in the game.

Jason Kelce feels kickers are having it too easy. For one, the improving athleticism means it is easier to kick 60-yard field goals. Secondly, the rules make it easier for them as opposing players are not allowed to rough them up.

The former All-Pro feels it has taken the creativity and drive out of offenses. As they can reach the opposition’s 40-yard line and call in the kicking team to salvage some points. Offenses tend to take it easy and not continue to the end zone.

Jason Kelce’s suggestion to make it harder for kickers

In that discussion, the Kelce brothers agreed that it was becoming easier for kickers. So, to make it tougher for them, the now ESPN analyst had a crazy idea.

Make it tighter. Just have a big one post and you just gotta hit the post. That’s three points.

Kelce said.

This suggestion brought out a bout of laughter from brother Travis Kelce. He knew his brother was just ranting and his suggestions were not feasible.

His brother kept saying that he does not find kickers making sense on an NFL team. But both of them did acknowledge that kickers Harrison Butker and Jake Elliott did win them a lot of games. Elite kickers bail teams out of bad situations.

But Jason Kelce feels that teams resorting to kicking is not good for football. Which explains why he wants to reduce their influence. He wants offenses and defenses to dictate the game and not resort to kicking field goals.
