In Short
  • Jason Kidd has been dismissed as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, shocking fans and analysts alike.
  • The Mavericks finished the season with a disappointing 26-56 record, leading to Kidd's firing.
  • Former player DeMarcus Cousins suggests Kidd should take a coaching position with the Orlando Magic.

Ever since the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic, the franchise has been tumbling down the hill. Be it losing respect as an organization, or even their performances on the court, as Jason Kidd or the remaining players could not make up for the myriad injuries.

Injuries and conditioning were the reasons former GM Nico Harrison used to justify the trade. At the time, Kidd was supposedly unhappy with the trade.

The following season, Anthony Davis, the player who came in place of the Slovenian, struggled with health issues and was eventually traded.

The only silver linings amidst the dark cloud hanging over the franchise was when Harrison was dismissed, and Cooper Flagg ended up proving he can lead the franchise.

Despite that, the Mavericks finished with a miserable 26-56 record. Davis is no longer with the team, and the organization hired Masai Ujiri, the architect of the Toronto Raptors’ only championship to date, as the President of Basketball Operations.

Oh my goodness!… Jason Kidd just got fired. That’s a shocker there.

Charles Barkley remarked

His colleagues weren’t sure when the Hall of Famer first let out his reaction. Then, when he announced what he saw on his phone, the rest of Inside the NBA realized this was true. Jason Kidd had indeed parted ways with the Dallas Mavericks.

Fans in disbelief after Mavs let go of Jason Kidd

Charles Barkley and his colleagues were not the only ones to be shocked by this news. When Shams Charania‘s original tweet became public, eyebrows started rising.

Even though this might not have the seismic impact Luka Doncic’s trade left on the league and its fans, they were not expecting this. After all, Jason Kidd was expected to continue to evolve the Dallas Mavericks’ current squad.

Fans felt this was surprising, as not only does this leave the organization with the difficult task of finding another coach, but they are not going to find another one with the pedigree of the Mavericks’ great. Those bewildered comments flooded social media, examples of which are below.

Kidd might immediately land another head coaching job. After all, he helped Luka Doncic unlock his next gear that helped the Mavs make a run at the 2024 NBA championship.

Most of the top assistants have been recruited, which means the organization will be hard-pressed to find someone willing to take on the mess that is the Dallas Mavericks.

Jason Kidd has had stints with the Brooklyn Nets, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he won the 2020 championship as an assistant, and lastly, with the Mavericks.

That resume is enough for the California native to have teams with open head coaching positions to line up outside his door. But former player DeMarcus Cousins believes his former coach should go to one team.

J Kidd to Orlando.

DeMarcus Cousins wrote on X

The former center played, albeit briefly, under Kidd when they were on the Lakers. He believes the Orlando Magic is the best setup for the 53-year-old former point guard to move into.

They have a young team with great potential, but have not yet fulfilled it. If Kidd does take the job, expect the Magic to become preseason favorites to at least make a deep run in the 2027 postseason.
