The New England Patriots fandom must be grinning ear to ear after taking Javon Baker in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft. He made an eye-catching impression soon after the announcement, claiming it took long enough for a franchise to pick him.

Baker had a decent Combine score of 6.25 after finishing the 40-yard dash in a satisfactory 4.54 seconds. He was considered to be a very good outside receiver compared to a route runner. However, the 22-year-old doesn’t think there’s any receiver better than him in the league.

No way in fu**ing America; 10 receivers better than me. Outta your fu**ng mind.
a training video of Javon Baker surfaced online, in which he could be heard saying

He showed similar confidence during his first press conference as a New England Patriots player.

Come to the home stadium and bring your popcorn. That’s all I can tell you all. Bring your popcorn. I make people in wheelchairs stand up.

Hopefully, he is able to back his claims up because the Patriots require some of that after back-to-back disastrous seasons at Foxborough. Alongside Baker, they added Washington’s Ja’Lynn Polk (No. 37) and addressed their quarterback woes by selecting North Carolina’s Drake Maye (No. 3).

Will Javon Baker get enough snaps to prove himself in his rookie season?

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo promised to add sufficient attack power to turn things around in New England. After failing to land prized free agent Calvin Ridley, he chose to sign KJ Osborn, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings. Afterward, he turned to the draft with hopes of finding a few hidden gems.

Baker was a good addition to the receiver room, which doesn’t look too inspiring. New England has former Super Bowl winner JuJu Smith-Schuster—a 4.3% drop rate in his career—the only player with any experience. Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, and Jalen Reagor have yet to make meaningful snaps with the franchise.

Their best receiver last year was Douglas, who only managed a little over 500 yards. The next best was tight end Hunter Henry with 419 yards. Keeping that in mind, Mayo may give both Polk and Javon Baker time on the field.

Baker played his first two seasons for the Alabama Crimson Tide but was unable to beat the partnership of DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. He entered the transfer portal and joined the University of Central Florida. In the 2023 season, Baker caught 52 passes for 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns. He was included in the first-team All-Big 12 for leading the conference in receiving yards.
