- Jaxon Smith-Njigba signed a four-year, $168.6 million contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks, making him the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history.
- The deal provides the Seahawks with significant cap flexibility, spreading Smith-Njigba's cap hit over six seasons.
- John Schneider's management strategy allows the team to retain star players while preparing for future salary cap growth.
After the Seattle Seahawks won their second-ever Super Bowl, everyone in the football world knew that GM John Schneider was going to have his work cut out for him with Jaxon Smith-Njigba and others waiting for them to be paid.
The team did not have much of a hurdle, considering they were about to enter the 2026 offseason with a smidge over $74 million in cap space, the fifth most among all NFL teams.
They had already done most of their work in the 2025 offseason, signing Sam Darnold to a decent contract, which many felt at the time was an overpay.
However, that contract turned out to be quite valuable, considering how much less they are paying in comparison to other teams that did not reach the playoffs.
But Scheider still lost Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker to the Chiefs, a significant blow considering the running back was an embodiment of consistency all season long, and in the biggest game of the season.
The GM, though, moved on and focused on the next best player on the roster, and that was wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. After much back-and-forth, the two arrived at a compromise where the reigning Offensive Player of the Year would sign a four-year, $168.6 million contract.

Not only did John Schneider lock in one of the league’s best receivers currently, but he also confirmed that Darnold and JSN’s chemistry will continue to fuel their championship defense for a while.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s contract shows John Schneider’s wizardry
While signing Jaxon Smith-Njigba to a four-year deal, GM John Schneider effectively locked up their primary offensive weapon for a long time.
Four years might not sound like much, but as Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti revealed, the deal is actually much longer, which will keep the speedy and shifty wideout with the Seahawks throughout his prime.
NFL contract extensions do not just ‘tack-on’ to the end of current contracts.
Michael Ginnitti revealed
JSN’s Cash Flow Before/After
2026: $2.7M | $36.5M
2027: $23.8M | $32.6M
2028: n/a | $19.9M
2029: n/a | $31M
2030: n/a | $33.3M
2031: n/a | $41.8M
As per the salary cap expert, the Seattle Seahawks have spread Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s cap hit over six seasons, giving them enormous cap flexibility in later years.
The NFL is set to re-negotiate its media rights deal, which is expected to allow salary caps to grow faster than it already does. This shows John Schneider’s wizardry, as he not only keeps his star player happy but also retains cap flexibility in the future.
In fact, the 54-year-old still has $32 million currently to spend in this free agency. After losing a couple of star players, the GM might look to sign impactful players through free agency.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba resets the wide receiver market
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is just 24 years old and will now earn $168.6 million over the next six seasons. That is generational wealth for anyone, but the wideout does it while resetting his position group’s market.

His annual average of $42.15M becomes the most money ever handed over to a wide receiver. He may not have set the standard for those other than a quarterback, but he did for his fellow pass catchers.
This salary supercedes the one’s signed by Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, two of the best receivers in the league. But JSN can claim that his updated resume justifies the Seahawks making him the highest-paid in his department.
Puka Nacua is up next for an extension. The Los Angeles Rams might have to work a lot to free up enough money to pay their leading wide receiver after their NFC Championship rivals just helped Jaxon Smith-Njigba set the standard.
