The merger deal between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) might go through soon. As per reports from the PGA Tour, President Donald Trump has intervened in this deal which has led to some progress. Commissioner Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods are now grateful for Trump’s involvement.
In June 2023, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Public Investment Fund (PIF) governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan shocked the golfing world with the talks of the merger. The two of them would sit down together and announce a plan to reunify the game.
The sport of golf was left divided with the establishment of LIV Golf. The PIF-funded tour attracted some top golfers on big money deals which led to them leaving the tour and joining LIV. Since then there had been several battles between the two tours.
The loss of big names has taken a hit in viewership of the tour. The merger deal is expected to reunify the game and bring everyone back together.
However, since the announcement in June 2023, the deal has yet to go through. One of the biggest obstacles in this deal is expected to be the US Department of Justice (DOJ). With Donald Trump’s involvement, this issue can be solved.
In a statement released by Monahan, Woods and player director Adam Scott, the tour announced that they did ask President Trump to get involved in the merger talks.
We know golf fans are eagerly anticipating a resolution to negotiations with the Public Investment Fund and want to thank President Trump for his interest and long-time support of the game of golf. We asked the President to get involved for the good of the game, the good of the country, and for all the countries involved.

The trio would later express their gratitude towards Trump. They claimed that his leadership had brought them closer to a final deal.
We are grateful that his leadership has brought us to closer to a final deal, paving the way for reunification of men’s professional golf.

Donald Trump previously claimed he could get the merger done in 15 minutes
U.S. President Donald Trump is obviously a huge fan of golf. Several times, he can be seen playing the sport. He is also a huge supporter of LIV Golf. So for him to get involved in the merger deal makes sense. He had previously claimed that he could get it done in 15 minutes.

A few days before he won the 2024 U.S. Presidential election against Kamala Harris, appeared on the Let’s Go podcast alongside Jim Gray and Bill Belichick. During that, Trump said that if was elected as the President again, he could wrap up the deal soon.
Yeah, I could certainly help, but I could probably get it done. I would say it would take me the better part of 15 minutes to get that deal done.

4-time major champion Rory McIlroy would later comment on this matter. The North Irishman backed Trump to get it done and pointed out that it could “clear the way” for the PGA Tour and the PIF.
With Trump now at the helm, it remains to be seen when exactly this deal goes through. At the moment, the two tours are both operating an event, with the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale and the LIV Golf Riyadh event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
