In an exclusive interview with Golfweek, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan talked about the current status of golf and where he sees it heading in the future. The PIF deal remains unfinished business despite the current intervention of President Donald Trump.
When asked about the involvement of Trump in the PGA Tour-LIV Golf unification, Jay Monahan said that it’s solely because of his interest in the sport. He believes that with Trump’s intervention, the deal will come to fruition, and the fans will get their wishes fulfilled.
Since the division in the sport, the fans are waiting for one tour where both sides of players can compete together. With the division between PGA and LIV, the top players are now scattered throughout the leagues.
The PIF merger can not only help unify them but also lead golf in a better direction. Furthermore, Donald Trump said that he wants golf to be reunited and will help in any way he can.
Monahan stated that Trump is “playing a very constructive role trying to help” both parties find a common ground. He himself sees both the leagues coming together in the future, although a deal might not be immediately possible.
His focus is on solving the opportunity, and that’s reunifying the game.

He said he sees a future with Yasir Al-Rumayyan on the board, and he now has a better understanding of their vision. The merger deal will be their safe ticket to get the top players together to compete in highly anticipated events.
Rory McIlroy doesn’t believe PGA Tour needs merger deal with LIV Golf
While PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan remains positive on the merger deal, Rory McIlroy has a different opinion. He firmly stated in a press conference that the PGA Tour doesn’t necessarily need the merger deal, but it welcomes the unification of the players.

He feels the deal will surely take place sometime in the future, considering how close and positive the feedback has been since President Donald Trump’s involvement. McIlroy said that TV ratings have been good for the Tour, and with TGL’s debut, it’s only getting stronger.
I think the narrative around golf, I wouldn’t say needs a deal. I think the narrative around golf would welcome a deal in terms of just having all the best players together again. But I don’t think the PGA Tour needs a deal, I think the momentum is pretty strong.

While the deal would be the best outcome for the sport and its future, Rory McIlroy believes that solely from the PGA Tour’s perspective, it’s not necessary. The deal might not happen by 2025 as Tiger Woods predicted; it’ll take longer to sign officially. The fans will have to wait and see how long it takes for the merger to happen.
