Back in 2022, the Boston Celtics were looking to include Jaylen Brown in a trade deal for Kevin Durant. The move did not materialize, and Brown ended up staying in Boston.

The failed move worked out for both parties, as the Celtics won the championship in 2024 with Brown winning the Eastern Conference Finals and Finals MVP awards. Coming off his best individual season in the 2025-26 campaign, Brown was in the trade talks once again and was finally traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Former Boston Celtics star Tristan Thompson revealed that Boston fans are racist, and it may not have suited Brown.

When I played there, they call you the n-word. When they drunk, they’re going to call you that. … For what Jaylen Brown stands for, the city of Boston is different than that. When I look at JB, he’s doing stuff that Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell. He stands for something so big, which I love about him.

Jaylen Brown finished sixth in the MVP race this year. He elevated himself to one of the best two-way players in the game today. However, the Celtics fanbase is known for being racist to their players, as Tristan Thompson mentioned.

In a season with low expectations due to Jayson Tatum missing the majority of the season, Brown led the Celtics to a second-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings with a 56-26 record.

After failing to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, many believed that Brown’s relationship with the club would deteriorate. His future was up in the air as the Celtics continued to have talks to ship him away. In the end, they traded him to the 76ers in exchange for Paul George and some draft picks in a blockbuster trade that surprised many.

Celtics’ trade sending Jaylen Brown to the 76ers was made under duress

It is fair to assume that the 76ers were the winners of this trade deal. While they did give up multiple picks, they lost just one player in Paul George.

George may have been an elite two-way player in his prime, but at 35, he has struggled with injuries and is not the player he once was, while Brown is one of the best players in the league today. NBA insider Brian Windhorst believes that the Celtics made the trade ‘under duress’.

This was not a trade that you would make in a clinical setting… You wouldn’t do this trade under these circumstances if everything was equal, that something wasn’t equal.

After the trade, there is no doubt that the 76ers have become a much better team. In fact, it was the 76ers that eliminated the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs this year.

Celtics have taken a step back after trading Jaylen Brown

Since the Celtics’ failed trade for Kevin Durant in 2022, Jaylen Brown has led them to two NBA Finals and helped them win the championship in 2024. He was named to the All-NBA Second Team for his performances this year as he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 71 appearances.

NBA insider Brett Siegel was left surprised by the trade and believes that the Celtics have taken a step back.

The Celtics could’ve had Giannis for Jaylen Brown, two unprotected first-round picks, and one of their younger guys like Hugo Gonzalez. Instead, they get Paul George for Brown… None of this makes any sense for the Celtics, who have clearly taken a massive step back.

The trade sees Brown join forces with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philly. The expectations will be sky-high heading into next season.
