“Perfect setup for Maye” – Jerod Mayo names Jacoby Brissett as Patriots’ QB1 over Drake Maye, fans react

Like many teams in the league, the New England Patriots have also decided to choose experience for the starting role. That’s why, despite drafting one of the top quarterbacks of the 2024 Class as the third overall pick, head coach Jerod Mayo named Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback for the coming 2024 season. 

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday that the Patriots have named Jacoby as the starter over rookie Drake Maye. for their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Patriots later confirmed the news on the same day.

There are a lot of factors that led to this choice. I think the hard part is thinking in the short term and the long term at the same time. As an organization, though, we feel like Jacoby gives us our best chance to win right now.

Jerod Mayo told reporters on Thursday

Although the North Carolina standout portrayed himself as a promising quarterback for the team’s rejuvenating era, Mayo believed he wasn’t yet ready to take up the responsibilities that come with the role of starting quarterback. In Mayo’s first season as the head coach, Maye will serve as the backup to Brissett and develop himself behind the scenes.

Rapoport further reported a previous conversation with the veteran quarterback, where he reflected confidence in becoming the starting quarterback and claimed he is the right person to not only mentor rookie Maye and other young quarterbacks, but also lead the offense to glory. Fortunately, that’s exactly what fans believe.

Fans validated head coach Mayo’s decision to choose Brissett over Maye and not throw the rookie into the limelight without proper preparation. One fan praised the eight-year veteran, “Brissett is a great leader. Perfect setup for Maye,” while another wrote, “Best thing in the world for Drake Maye.” Here are some of the fan reactions:

Previously, when Brissett was injured and Maye was given the starting position in the preseason, New England’s head coach was asked if he would give the rookie the starting position. But he dismissed all speculations by calling him the “second-best quarterback on the roster” and assured the veteran will resume his place once he recovers. He indeed stood by his words by officially confirming Brissett as the starter for Week 1.
