The 2024 NFL season doesn’t seem to be going as the New England Patriots had hoped for after they faced their second defeat in the last three matches. Their most bizarre game so far was on Thursday Night Football Match against the New York Jets, where they were outperformed with a humiliating 3-24.
Seeing no progress in New England, many seem to call for a change in the starting quarterback position– which also happened during the game when their third overall pick Drake Maye made his NFL debut in the final moments of the game when he could hardly make any difference but indeed got a valuable experience against the Jets’ tough defense.
When head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about it, first he refused to comment, saying it’s not entirely his decision. Secondly, he offered a vote of confidence to the current starter Jacoby Brissett. He also clarified that the reason why he made Maye enter the game in the final moments was for him to gain some real experience.
(Are the Patriots considering a QB change?) I don’t know. We talk about it every single week… we’ll get together as a coaching staff.Pats Head coach Mayo said via Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub
Despite how the game turned out for the Patriots on Thrusday, Mayo showed his confidence in Brissett by appreciating his toughness and grit against the Jets.
Drake Maye meets Aaron Rodgers after challenging NFL debut
Even though his debut didn’t go as he planned, the third overall pick got lucky meeting the legendary Aaron Rodgers, who displayed great prowess by defeating the Patriots by a difference of 21 points. In fact, the rookie stood near Rodgers’ post-game interview with Amazon’s Prime Video to meet him and the two had a brief discussion afterward.
The four-time NFL MVP was also asked to offer any advice to New England rookie, but he refused to say anything, saying, “That’s a private conversation.” And from their interaction on the football field after the game suggested that Maye received some good advice from the veteran star.
On Thursday, Maye arrived on the field with only 4:24 minutes left in the game. In such a short time facing the strong Jets’ defense, he completed four out of his eight passes for 22 yards along with two sacks. Meanwhile, Rodgers finished the game with 27 out of his 35 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns.
