American tennis star Jessica Pegula has defended Iga Swiatek‘s explanation after the Polish player was suspended for a month due to a failed doping test. Swiatek has faced significant backlash from the tennis community, alongside Jannik Sinner.

Pegula, who defeated Swiatek in the US Open quarterfinals earlier this year, stated that the Pole’s explanation about her doping case was clear. The American also supported the tennis authorities, praising their proper handling of the situation.

I don’t know, it seems like they [ITIA] investigated it and she had her reasoning. I mean you have to trust that they’re doing their job, that they’re coming to the right conclusion. I think it’s just frustrating for people on the outside – or even for some players – that it just seems so hit or miss with how people get punished.

Swiatek’s one-month suspension has now ended, making her eligible to compete in the United Cup starting on December 27. This tournament serves as preparation for the Australian Open, where she will aim to win her first title.

I’ve been explained why it happens. But at the same time, it’s like: ‘Yeah, but how does this vary so deeply?’ And I think that can be frustrating. But how it was explained to me, it seems pretty cut and dried almost – and the explanation made sense.

However, much of the criticism directed at Swiatek has come from former World No. 1 Simona Halep. The two-time Grand Slam champion was initially handed a four-year suspension following a failed doping test after the 2022 US Open.

WADA offers advice to protect the rankings of Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is planning to update its rules to be more forgiving in doping cases. This decision follows recent controversies in tennis. Both Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek tested positive for banned substances in 2024. The news has deeply impacted the tennis world. Sinner may face a suspension of one to two years, while Swiatek already served a one-month ban.

WADA is rethinking how it handles cases of accidental doping. Instead of calling it a “contaminated product,” they will now refer to it as an “unpredictable source of a prohibited substance.” This new term may help reduce penalties for athletes who unintentionally consume banned substances. Both Sinner and Swiatek claim their cases were accidental.

Another big change involves setting minimum levels for banned substances. If the amount of a prohibited substance is very low, it might not count as a positive test. This would help athletes avoid punishment for unintentional traces of banned substances in their systems.

These changes aim to make WADA’s rules fairer. Athletes who unknowingly ingest small amounts of banned substances could face lighter penalties. The reforms hope to address the concerns raised by recent cases and ensure that punishments fit the circumstances.
