American WTA star Jessica Pegula is relieved after getting the monkey off her shoulder. The World No. 6 finally broke her Grand Slam quarterfinal jinx by making it into the 2024 US Open semifinals. Pegula beat the 2022 US Open champion and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday (September 4).
After losing six consecutive Major quarterfinals, Pegula was under the pump coming into the clash with Swiatek. Trailing Swiatek 6-3 in the head-to-head record also added to her worries. However, against all the odds, Pegula came out on top and earned her maiden Grand Slam semifinal qualification.
The American ace was delighted after finally having broken the curse. Pegula expressed happiness at being able to reach her maiden Major semifinal with an emphatic win against Swiatek on home ground.
Thank god I was able to do it, and finally—finally!—I can say semifinalist. To do it primetime, in Ashe, against the No. 1 player in the world, it’s crazy. But I knew I could do it, I just had to go out and execute my game.Jessica Pegula said (H/T: US Open)
The 30-year-old will next face Karolina Muchova, who beat Beatriz Haddad Maia to make it to her second consecutive US Open semifinal.
Jessica Pegula aware of Karolina Muchova’s prowess ahead of US Open semifinal clash
Looking ahead to her semifinal clash with Karolina Muchova, Jessica Pegula acknowledged the Czech Republic player’s strengths. The American hailed Muchova for her athleticism and the way she has performed since her comeback from injury layoff.

Pegula stated that she will need to play at her best when she faces Muchova. She is aware that her opponent has better experience of going deep at Grand Slams and is looking forward to the clash.
She’s so good, so talented, so athletic, I love how she just doesn’t play [due to injury] and just comes out and beats everybody. She’s a really good player. I know she has a lot of experience going deep in Slams as well, so I’m going to have to bring my tennis. I’ll worry about that, maybe when I wake up in the morning.Jessica Pegula said
The two players’ first and only meeting on the WTA tour came a couple of weeks ago at the Cincinnati Open. Pegula came out on top in three sets, beating Muchova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. That said, Muchova will not make things easy for the American considering her form since her return from injury.
The 28-year-old made it to the final at the WTA 250 tournament in Palermo and the quarterfinals at Eastbourne International. At the US Open this fortnight, Muchiva beat French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini as well as four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka en route to the semifinals.
