JJ Redick’s Avengers for Lakers mission: Rajon Rondo wanted as assistant among others

Rajon Rondo is a top candidate to be JJ Redick's assistant on the Los Angeles Lakers team with long term mission in mind

JJ Redick is finally the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. After weeks of being a frontrunner, then his name suddenly vanishing when a back-to-back championship-winning college head coach was touted to take the job, to again being the frontrunner and finally agreeing to a 4-year deal, Redick has got his dream job.

However, he is starting with a clean slate. Which means he needs the best assistants he can get to join him. One of them is touted to be Rajon Rondo.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania broke the news that the former Los Angeles Lakers point guard is a frontrunner to be Redick’s top assistant. Their former player was instrumental in hoisting their 17th NBA title during the bubble. But what he left was an impression of a former player who is a top coaching choice should he want to take that career choice.

Rajon Rondo does not stop from letting anyone know what they need to do better. Especially if it is someone who holds an ego but has not helped his team win.

These qualities make him a logical choice as Redick’s top assistant. People will respect the duo for their knowledge of the game. Players often lose respect for coaches when they think they know better. Something that was on full display with the Lakers this past season.

The Los Angeles Lakers hired JJ Redick with the intention of taking the team into a new era. An era where their most important player, LeBron James, will not be around. They need continuity to establish a system that can help them achieve success in the short as well as the long run.

The long run is what the Los Angeles Lakers were primarily focused on while searching for their next head coach. With LeBron James about to retire soon, they did not want to sacrifice their future for immediate success. That is where JJ Redick comes in. The long-term solution the Lakers badly needed.

Redick will be tasked to first eke out the best of the current roster. That is, manage LeBron James’ minutes so that he stays fresh for the playoffs. More importantly, enables Anthony Davis to be the lead superstar. His 4th quarter production was the biggest concern during Darvin Ham‘s tenure. Redick will be looking to address that. But after completing all that, he will need to develop the younger players on the roster.

Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Max Christie and most likely Bronny James are long-term building blocks. Once established, JJ Redick and Rob Pelinka will build around this core for long-term success.
