On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Angels found themselves on the end of a controversial umpire call which cost them the game. This saw them leave the match against the Baltimore Orioles with a sour taste in their mouth.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Los Angeles Angels found themselves one run down with two outs and Jo Adell on first base. The 25-year-old who recently came under fire for his “embarrassing” base running blunder against the Tampa Bays Rays, once again became the center of attention in this game.

This time, he would once again try to use his speed and get into a scoring position. As Hunter Regnifo faced off the closing pitcher Craig Kimbrel, Adell got ready to take off. A strike-two pitch saw the outfielder dash towards second base. A perfect throw from James McCann to Gunnar Henderson saw the youngster tag Adell which led umpire Nic Lentz signaling him out.

The Angels went on to review the play. In the replays, it seemed Adell’s foot had just touched the plate before Henderson’s glove touched him. However, the umpires ruled in favor of the Orioles and stood with the on-field call. This ignited huge boos from the home crowd as the visitors walked away as 6-5 winners.

Needless to say, Adell was left surprised by the review decision. After the game, he would express his disappointment and speak about how things could have been different if he was declared safe.

Fan reactions to Umpire’s controversial call on Jo Adell

MLB fans on social media have come in the support of Jo Adell after the review decision went against him. They would call out the ruling and go on to slam the MLB replay system which operates in Manhattan, New York.

Some fans questioned what the officials watched in the replays, while some made jokes claiming that it might have been Angel Hernandez who came to this decision. The Cuban official himself has been under the wrath of the fans for quite some time for some of his calls. One user on X who was shocked by the decision, went on to describe the call as “horrible“.

The debate regarding this decision will likely continue for a while. This loss meant that the Angels lost again and are now 10-15 for the season while being third in the AL West division standings. For the O’s though, this win kept them 0.5 games behind New York Yankees in first place in the AL East standings.
