Joao Felix recently expressed his desire to replicate Antoine Griezmann’s success under manager Diego Simeone. The Portuguese star confirmed that he’s not had any problem in adjusting to Atletico Madrid’s defensive style. Atlético bought Joao Felix for €126 million (£113m/$148m) from Benfica after Griezmann joined Barcelona in 2019. The 19 year old was the hottest property in 2019-2020 summer transfer window.

However the 20 year old has had a fairly average season at Atleti, scoring 8 goals and providing 3 in 35 appearances. Joao Felix was plagued by injuries but the midfielder has shown flashes of brilliance. He aims to walk on the same path of former star Antoine Griezmann.

Joao Felix on following Griezmann

In an Interview with Marca Felix said, “If I can do what Griezmann has done or improve it. It will be fine because he has made history in this club. He has done it very well, he has grown a lot with El Cholo [Simeone], and if I do it the same, better for me.”

Many football enthusiast think that Felix is not suited Atletico’s defensive football. To which Jao replied by saying, “Many people say one thing, others say another. But I am here to play Cholo football and I do. Let’s see. I’m adapting to Spain, doing my football, I’m meeting the club and always thinking of improving.”

Diego Simeone has expressed his faith in the young Portuguese.

Joao Felix on comparisions with Sergio Agüero

On being compared to Sergio Agüero, Joao Felix said, “Kun is now a great player. But when he was at Atletico, I was five years old and I don’t remember anything. It’s good to break records. All the players like to make history and of course I’m happy to be part of Atletico’s history and to have surpassed a player like Kun.”

Atletico Madrid face RB Leipzig in the UEFA champion league quarterfinals. The Red and whites will be eager to establish a win over the Germans in the single tie quarterfinal match.

“Yes, the Champions League is always the high point of any player and even more so playing it here in Lisbon, at home, I am very happy and it is very good for me,” later added Joao Felix.
