Jannik Sinner clashed with Joao Fonseca for the first time in his career and was on the verge of crashing out of Indian Wells. As expected, the match was a hard-fought battle from the very start.
Sinner, with a 7-6(6), 7-6(4) scoreline, booked a spot in the quarterfinal of Indian Wells for the third time in his career. The Italian ace smashed 15 aces to Fonseca’s nine. At the press conference after his defeat, the 19-year-old shared the key takeaways from the match.
As a player, when you lose, it’s normal to feel a certain sadness or disappointment and try to analyze what you did right and what you did wrong, but I am also pleased with how I played. Personally, I don’t usually get angry with myself when I feel like I did things well, and the credit goes to the opponent. I just try to analyze what I could have done better. Maybe I could have served better at 6-5 in the tiebreak that I had. I don’t know. There’s always that.
It was Fonseca’s career’s first fourth-round match in a Masters 1000 tournament. He was chasing the third title of his career following his wins at the 2025 Argentina Open and the Swiss Indoors the same year.
Jannik Sinner gives his take on his match against Joao Fonseca
Joao Fonseca burst onto the scene after defeating Learner Tien in the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, and from then onward, the tennis world started to hype him up. He lived up to the expectations by defeating home favorite Francisco Cerundolo in the Argentina Open before beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final of the Swiss Indoors to win his career’s first ATP 500 title.

After making his Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2025 Australian Open, Fonseca went on to feature in the main draw events of the remaining three Majors. Because of his meteoric rise, many think he has the ability to challenge the duopoly of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who later analyzed his match against the teenager at the press conference after his win.
I think he has no fear, he likes to go for his shots, he is very aggressive, and he has a great mindset. As I mentioned earlier, I think he is in very good hands, he has a positive approach to tennis, which is very important, especially in young players. I don’t know him well off the court, but he seems like a very humble guy, a humble player. It will surely be very difficult to beat him in the future; it already is today, but in the future, it will be even more so.
Sinner, a two-time semifinalist at Indian Wells, has one Sunshine Doubles title to his name. He lifted the 2024 Miami Open by defeating Grigor Dimitrov. Last year, he was forced to skip both the Sunshine Doubles events due to his three-month doping ban. Sinner has yet to win a title this year, having lost to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals and to Jakub Mensik in the Qatar Open quarterfinals.
